Very Good Book!

I found this book in the county library and read it cover to cover. I found it very informative and well written. It was clear and to the point. This book deals mainly with pitch class set theory in the twelve-tone and fewer sets, but there is also dealings with more tonal aspects of twentieth century music, such as Stravinky's Petrushka. The author states that it is best to follow along and listen to (or play) the examples as you go. This is true. You can find performances of almost all the examples on youtube. And, the exercises at the end of each chapter are important to really understand the topics. They do help drive home the subject. I'm going to buy this book for reference and for review. It's a great book (a little pricy but definitely worth it). The cover states exactly the content. It's a stimulating read.

A Great Book on Some Great Music

This book is one of the best books regarding theoretical concepts. The book is easy and fun to read. The purpose of this book is to analyisis twentieth-centuary. He goes back to the roots of tonal music and uses them to aid you in understanding 20th centuary music. The grammer regarding serial music is all there and everything presented to the reader in a clear and concise manner. I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking to study 20th centuary music.
