Good first chapters, lacking explanations in the later ones

A common complaint about many textbooks is that they start explaining everything very simply, but after a few chapters the level of complexity suddenly ramps up and the book leaves many readers behind. This book is a perfect example of that. I got it because, despite knowing some other programming languages, I wanted to learn JavaScript. The initial 4 chapters were great and provided a good introduction to the language, along with the key concepts of HTML and CSS. However, in chapter 5 the author basically posted the code for a version of the game Battleship stating what each portion of the code would do but not explaining how the commands listed achieved so. It might be possible for somebody with prior programming experience to intuit what the new commands and functions presented do, but if this is a book for kids I wonder how easy it is for them to achieve this if it is their first foray into programming. I was also looking for a good teaching text, not a demonstration of the things you can do with the language. Chapter 6 and 7 again do a decent job of introducing JQuery and the HTML Canvas, but chapters 8 and 9 are again just code listings (although chapter 9 offers a basic description of object-oriented programming concepts) for two other games without any explanations of the new functions or the Angular framework that are used. The first chapters of the book demonstrate the author's ability to explain concepts clearly and in a friendly manner, I hope that in the next edition of the book he keeps that spirit in all of the book's chapters.

Jack Straw was born in Buckhurst Hill in 1946. Brought up in Loughton, he studied law at Leeds University and practiced criminal law before becoming an MP in 1971. He served as Home Secretary, Foreign Secretary and Leader of the House of Commons during Tony Blair's premiership and Secretary of State for Justice and Lord Chancellor under Gordon Brown. Married with two children, he lives in London and his Blackburn constituency.�

Well written and interesting...

Unlike some of the rushed memoirs that came out immediately following Labour's loss in the UK general election in 2010, Jack Straw has taken time to reflect on his period in office and as a result this book is perhaps a bit more thoughtful than some of the earlier ones. Although the whole Blair/Brown saga is touched on, (how could it not be?), thankfully Straw hasn't built the whole book round it. In fact, he gives a picture of himself as a man who concentrated very much on the responsibilities of whichever department he was working in and largely stayed out of the party wrangling going on around him.

Straw starts with a quick resum� of his life before Labour took office in 1997 but most of the book is focused on his time in power. Having held two of the Great Offices of State as Home and then Foreign Secretary, Straw is well-placed to discuss the workings of government at the highest levels, and to give some insights into the major events of the time - the Stephen Lawrence debate, prison overcrowding, the formation of the new Justice Department and the Supreme Court amongst many other things. Obviously Iraq and the Middle East rank high in this, particularly as Straw gradually found his own approach diverging from Blair's. However, again, he manages not to get bogged down in the well-tramped ground of the lead up to the Iraq war, instead expanding the discussion to include his views on Israel, Iran and the policies of the US, UK and Europe in regard to the region. While there is much in here about UK domestic politics, as Foreign Secretary Straw worked closely with the US adminstration and talks extensively about his relationships with people of the stature of Rice and Powell as they worked together to maintain a common approach to foreign policy matters.

If the book has a weakness, it is that sometimes Straw assumes that we know and remember events as clearly as he does and so doesn't take time to explain the background as fully as he might. For instance, he refers to Brown's remarks about Mrs Duffy during the election campaign, but doesn't remind us what these remarks were. As a bit of a political junkie and because the events were so recent, this didn't present a problem for me but may do so for US readers. Even in the UK I suspect that in 10 years time memories will have faded and I wonder if the book's longevity will be affected as a result. Perhaps that's a recommendation to read it now!

Overall, a well written, interesting biography leavened by a considerable amount of self-deprecating humour - very enjoyable.

A Peek into the Red Ministerial Box

I ordered this book from Amazon.com back in August, but, since it never seemed to arrive, I finally had to order it directly from Amazon.co.uk, but even with the extra foreign shipping costs, it was definitely worth the wait.

I read "Last Man Standing" because I am addicted to British politics (thanks to BBC Democracy Live and the UK Parliament website). I was especially interested in learning what a Minister of State actually does during the course of his day. From Mr Straw's account of his thirteen years of juggling the ball of world events and, at the same time, managing his Blackburn constituency, I am impressed both with his energy and with his equanimity, particularly in navigating what I gather were sometimes treacherous political waters. I say 'gather', because Mr Straw is properly reticent on such matters. Those looking for sensational revelations about the Blair-Brown years will have to go elsewhere.

Mr Straw laces his memoir with frequent and often self-deprecating applications of keen wit. His compelling account of his childhood in Essex (one doesn't often read about an 'ordinary' child and future politician who has not attended public [i.e., private] school) represents the perfect prelude for a career that eventually finds him wearing the knee breeches and heavy gold-braided robes of the Lord Chancellor (His choosing to do away with the "full bottom wig" seems especially apropos). Despite what must be the official restrictions on what he can tell us, Mr Straw gives his readers an intriguing glimpse of his career as both Home and Foreign Secretary as well as Leader of the House of Commons.

My overall impression gleaned from the narrative is that Jack Straw is an incredibly *nice* man. I enjoyed reading his political autobiography immensely.

Fascinating, Not a Life for Me.

I would have given it 4.5 or 9/10 but could not half colour the star. A true politicians memoir, written after due consideration, once his political career was coming to an end. I have to admire the sheer stamina of all men and women who seek high office, particularly those coming from humble backgrounds. Perhaps Jack had some good advantages, good education, help on the way, but he still had to work hard, as you read between the lines. He held some of the highest offices in the land, he was not short term in any one, you can't say that for many politicians. You may not agreed with his politics, it is a dog eat dog life, but the pressures are continually on our leaders, 24/7 media coverage, there is no hiding place.
Jack obviously played down the pressures in this book and gave a balanced account of his time in office, warts and all, not an easy thing to achieve in modern life.
An excellent read and an insight into political power, not for the workshy!!

About the Author

Murray R. Spiegel held positions at Harvard University, Columbia University, Oak Ridge and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and served as a mathematical consultant at several large companies. His last Position was professor and Chairman of mathematics at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Hartford Graduate Center. He was the author of numerous journal articles and books on various topics in mathematics.
Seymour Lipschutz, Ph.D., is a Mathematics professor who has written more than 15 Schaum's Outlines.

Forget the others - this is all you will need

I used an earlier edition of this great text back in 1968 while an undergraduate in Physics. In those days, Vector Algebra and Analysis were left as 'catch-it-as-you-can-and-on-the-fly' in or in between a given math or physics course. And really, that attitude has not changed today: look at any undergrad physics book in elementary mechanics or electromagnetism, and you will see that in many cases, Vector material in an appendix. And when it is addressed in a textbook, e.g., those used in the first two semesters of a typical undergrad sequence in basic calculus-based physics, you wish the God it wasn't. They go on and on about the obvious, give problems that are easy to solve but which do not prepare the student for real-world or real-physics research problems. And if you don't get lost in the cute little pictures and elaborate drawings those books use to 'explain' the concepts, you still wind up with a cursory understanding of Vectors and their importance in Physics, Engineering, and Mathematics.

Not so with this text. It gives sufficient theory, insightful examples, plenty of supplementary problems, and very helpful illustrations to drive the point being made home. Truly, a great book.

So when I learned Vector Analysis from this text, I carried this book with me for reference and further learning and refreshing myself throughout grad and post grad school, and it never let me down. To this day, there are three old copies on my books shelves, and now I just added this latest second edition copy - just for old times sake. You won't go wrong with this book.

Great textbook in Vector

This book is the best book in Vector I've ever seen. It is full of problems and solutions, but very few redundant problems. It states the vector theory in every aspect very clearly. One can learn Vector through examples and problems easily. When you study this book, you can really feel you are making progress smoothly every day.
If you buy this book, you need not to buy any other Vector textbooks. It is enough to be a textbook as well as an exercise book.

this book is priceless

I have a Ph.D. in engineerong and i still use Spiegel's book to learn from. This book is more than an introduction, but he does a great job explaining all problems including the mathematical proofs. If you still have trouble, you should in addition to this book get the rea problem solver on vector analysis. However, once you master the schaums book, all other vector analysis books will seem either elementary to you or much easier to understand.

Raw, gutsy in its honesty, Ally Sheedy lets it all hang out.

Emotionally raw and free of standard poetic justifications Ms. Sheedy delivers to us in quite simple honesty all the angst and despair of addictions and cages, both those placed upon her and those she's adopted as her own. Some passages are haunting, giving me cause to pause and wonder if she had lead specific moments of my own life, and undoubtedly moments from scores of others. I applaud this work, not completely on artistic merit, but more importantly for its depth and the author's ability to convey to us, the average reader, what an unsettled existence all the so-called riches of life can bring. I look forward to reading her next volumn.

Honest....but heartbreaking

The publisher claims that this book is "a work of fiction".

If only that were the case. Then the contents in it wouldn't break your heart. Save for her poem on abortion ("Local Anesthesia"), I believe everything to be true, based on her own experiences. It is obvious to me that there is no role she can play whose life experiences would be more horrific than her own. Ally's poems on domestic violence give you a vision of pure hell.

She is a survivor. She gives a new definition to the word. If you are a fan then this book is a must. Your heart truly will be extended to her as you read her book. And when you watch her movies you will look at her with heartfelt compassion. This is the affect that it has had on me. Be prepared to cry.

An honest confessional about the perils of self-destruction.

Intially I read the book my senior year in high school when it first appeared in 1991. I still adhere to my original opinion and find the work painfully raw which in most cases would drown the message out in other books, but here in so few pages is a honeycomb; filled with both the sting of life's hardships and the rich of their rewards. Where most poets would leave off their insecurites and misfortune, by cleverly disguising with metaphore and carefully constructed phrases. This poet manages to create out of a lifetime more than just a story but a journey of the lonely pilgrimage in which we all quest. There's an overwhelming sincerity in each line, granted there is no regard to basic poetic structure but only a scholar would notice. Most people who have read the book would enjoy what I enjoyed about it: human struggle.

About the Author

Jayne-Anne Gadhia is the CEO of Virgin Money, and the longest-serving CEO of any European bank. A Chartered Accountant, she spent six years at Norwich Union (now Aviva) before becoming one of the founders of Virgin Direct in 1995 In 1998 she set up the Virgin One account which was acquired by the Royal Bank of Scotland in 2001. After five years at RBS as part of the Retail Executive Committee, she returned to Virgin as the CEO of Virgin Money. In 2012 Virgin Money acquired Northern Rock and, in 2014, successfully listed on the London Stock Exchange. A vocal supporter of businesses responsibility to make a positive contribution to society, Jayne-Anne is a trustee of Business in the Community, the Tate Gallery, and non-exec Director of the Dumfries House Trust. And in 2014 she was awarded a CBE in 2014 for services to banking and voluntary service. In 2015 Jayne-Anne led a government review focused on the representation of women in the Financial Services industry. Her report led to HM Treasury’s Women in Finance Charter – a commitment by firms to work together for gender equality in financial services. In 2016 Jayne-Anne was appointed as the government’s Women in Finance Champion; she was recently appointed to the London Mayor’s Business Advisory Board and is leading a Review into Student Support in Scotland. Jayne-Anne lives in Edinburgh with her husband and their teenaged daughter.
