About the Author
Yong Ho received his Ph.D. in anthropology and linguistics, with a specialty in Chinese anthropology and language, from Columbia University. He served as the Director of Language at the China Institute in New York City and has taught Chinese at various institutions in the U.S.

My first HIPPOCRENE Chinese Book

I came to this book with an intermediate level of Mandarin, so I was past all the greetings, numbers, basic conversation as I had used other resources. (Integrated Chinese Level 1 Part 1, Mastering Conversational Chinese for Beginners and a couple of phrasebooks). With that said, I'm not familiar with how the previous Hippocrene Chinese books were set and how this book builds upon previous knowledge.

What I do know is, this book is extensive, clear, and I enjoy reading the dialogues so far. There is a glossary at the book that has vocabulary from the Beginner's Edition of this Chinese series so that's a big refresher for people coming from the beginner book to this book.

First, this book starts off each chapter with a conversation in characters supplemented only by pinyin followed by a reading passage that is entirely all characters that talks summarizes said-conversation. The audio couldn't have been any clearer and is one of the strongest point of this book. It really helps to hear each conversation and reading passage in a native voice and enjoy just how fluidly it is spoken; not too fast, not too slow. (coming from somebody who doesn't like to hear the standard Beijing style of speech)

The lessons then go into explaining new grammar points introduced in each new lesson then neatly ending with exercises to make sure you did understand the content. The amount of characters you will learn in this book is a little above average. Honestly, I feel this intermediate book should of been MUCH bigger because the format of this book just works sooo well, very organized and rare will be the times where you feel lost.

Clearly, one of the best Chinese books I have the pleasure of learning from and I really hope this format is kept in the Hippocrene Chinese books, I'm ready for an "Advanced" Chinese or a much more expanded Hippocrene Intermediate Chinese book!

This book is for after the training wheels come off and you are ready to make some good progress towards becoming intermediate. Excellent dialog examples, clear teaching of grammar and useful exercises. Also very good explanations of how and when and why Chinese people say something one way versus saying the same thing another way. Well done.

Those who cannot successfully predict such mundane trivialities as next season's fashions in hemlines or the trends in popular music five years down the road can hardly expect to be taken seriously as prophets who can foretell the ultimate fate of the entire universe!" - From the Introduction by Joseph D. Pryce Ludwig Klages (1872-1956) has become one of the twentieth century's most unjustly neglected thinkers. Born in Hanover, Germany, in his youth he was one of the founders of the Cosmic Circle in Munich, which was centered on the ideas and poetry of Stefan George. He went on to become an important critic of the trends in philosophy, psychology and society of his day, and was often praised even by his adversaries. Klages rejected the modern world that he saw in development, calling instead for a renewal of civilization based upon the ideas of ancient Greece and German Romanticism. Klages was also responsible for making the unconscious the focus of modern psychology, and for introducing such terms as the "Id" and the introvert-extrovert scale to the discipline, although others were destined to take credit for these discoveries. He was honored by the German government with a Festschrift in conjunction with his 80th birthday.

Move over Freud, Klages was here first!

Brilliantly combining history and biography, Joseph Pryce introduces us to one of the most prolific philosophers of the twentieth century, Ludwig Klages. This book explores Klages' motivations and often overlooked theories about the roles of humanity. His theories are eerily accurate of today's society.

I have been reading Pryce's poetry for years. Like his poems this is a book you can read again and again. #Brilliant.

A Great Version of a Book We Could All Learn From

There is so much we in the west could learn from Eastern Philosophy. Confucius and Confucianism, Lao-tzu and Daoism, and Sun Tzu and the Art of War are just some of the Great Eastern Thinking we should look at and apply to our everyday lives.
The Art of War is more than a book on warfare. It is a book about battle yes, politics yes, but it can be applied to business, relationships, leadership, and other day to day life activities. It is a book that should be looked at.
This particular version and the other books in this illustrated series is awesome. It is so much fun to look at and read and yet we can learn so much from this work.
I agree, this is not the best complete translation. Personally, I enjoy the James Clavell translation. But, as a motivational book. As an illustrated book, this is very useful and enjoyable.
This is a very good purchase and can be applied in so many ways.

Sunzi Speaks well....

This particular translation of Sunzi's work, while simplified, is one of the better ones. It is a good book to peruse as a stand-alone or alternately a companion to a more complex version. True, the simplification can be a trifle distracting at times, but the amusing drawings and casual language capture the attention of the reader more than the dry translations that are the norm, keeping the focus on the intent behind the prose.
Should one be looking for a scholarly piece for scholarly work, it is likely that this would not be the correct book to use. For reading pleasure and comprehension, though, this particular work cannot be beaten. To dismiss it as suitable only for children or semi-literates smacks of elitism and narrow-mindedness.

Sunzi is most excellent (even if he did get me sent to the colonel's office)

I've stood at attention in front of colonels for having my soldiers read this book on two occasions. And I'll accept the risk of being there again.

Sun Tzu is the best known of the military classics and the most widely read, for good reason. He knew his stuff and wrote in terms of principles rather than specifics. This book is the starting point for a theoretical understanding of military science and conflict.

This is the most accessible translation of Sun Tzu's Art of War availible. The text is contemporary english at roughly a seventh grade level, and the illustrations are brilliant. The illustrations both illuminate the concepts in the text and are lightly humorous. This worked to great advantage when I ordered soldiers who were somewhat suspicious of intellectual endeavors to read it. The most rewarding moment was when a mechanic overheard an exchange between senior officers, leaned over to me and quietly asked if what was going on was like a specific thing Sun Tzu was talking about.

On the down side... The comic book format is misleading (as the translated text is serious) and will not inspire respect from intellectual snobs. The commentary by later authors that shows up in other translations is absent (maybe not a down side, the commentary can be distracting and confusing).

Overall, well worth the investment, and most enjoyable.

Possibly the best TSR book ever?

Knowing that TSR's produced some real stinkers (approximately a third of the grossly exploited Dragonlance series for example), it's great to see something that captures the essence of the high fantasy genre while putting in some interesting spins. The female characters are great, and rather than being simple sex objects and baby machines, in a very real way the story revolves around them. For example, the immediate effects of the seductress' actions were still being felt a generation later, her nefarious achievements far outstripping anything the men accomplished, including even the Mordred-like Gorgon. As for the high fantasy feel, it seemed that finally elves were magical, 'halflings' weren't just cloned from Tolkien (I can't stand kender either), and the monster was a formidable beast and enemy of a thousand years who still had a weak spot. Birthright is perhaps the best AD&D world created, even if it never really got the chance it deserved. The book reflects this.

A slowly developing novel with an incredible ending

"The Iron Throne", the first of five books set in the Birthright gaming world, is a book that requires patience on the part of the reader. The book begins in an intriguing manner, mainly the abduction of a prominent character and the beginnings of a civil war. The long running civil war is the central theme in this novel.
A select few in the war torn empire all try to achieve the title of emperor upon the death of the current, aging emperor. The one direct descendent is missing and another takes over the role as emperor. Once the descendent is found alive, another round of the civil war begins. The result has a lasting effect on the empire. The background of the nation is overly detailed and not absolutely essential to the central story. Once the civil war begins, the book accelerates at a rapid pace.
After the civil war, a former human named Raesene but now transformed monster named the Gorgon, has his own plans for the empire. Once the Gorgon starts employing members of the empire to achieve his desires, another war soon ensues. The Gorgon also causes some internal strife among major players within the empire.
The ending, while a bit surprising, is presented well and does leave the door open for a sequel. The sequel, "War", was the last of the Birthright books published by TSR. All of the Birthright books are out of print. If you are a fan of historical, civil war fantasy and are a patient reader, "The Iron Throne" would be a worthwhile read.

The First in TSR's new series Birthright is a success.

The author, Mr. Hawke, was an excellent choice to start TSR's new world of Birthright. Characters, while not fantastic, were believable and likable. Hawke took many old ideas and gave them a new face in this book, something I have found that not many authors are able to do, especially within the fantasy genre. The story and plot were good, and I was also pleased to see some new races in the story. If the author had spent as much time on the characters as he did on the history of the world of Cerilia, Iron Throne would have definitely been worthy of a ten. A word to readers: This book would not be good for young readers, as well as people looking for an easy, unintellectual read. For those preferences, a great book would be the second in this series, Greatheart, by Dixie Lee McKeone

About the Author
Charles Johnson is a novelist, essayist, literary scholar, philosopher, cartoonist, screenwriter, and professor emeritus at the University of Washington in Seattle. His fiction includes Dr. King’s Refrigerator, Dreamer, Faith and the Good Thing, and Middle Passage, for which he won the National Book Award. In 2002 he received the Arts and Letters Award in Literature from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. He lives in Seattle.

A new approach to an old tale

This novel moves African-American literature beyond African American, and ironically by way of it's oldest from, the slave narrative. Using his strong philosophical background in eastern religions and texts, Johnson appies Bhuddist and Taoist ideas of the self to deal with the concept of race in America. This book operates on many levels, some we've seen before in African American texts, which he uses as a backdrop for his transcendence of the slave narrrative's limitations. Incorporating these eastern influences into the novel sheds new light on the search for racial identity, and gender identity of the biracial chimera that narrates the tale. Johnson keeps the many ideas and happenings of the novel from being overbearing with a wonderful humor. The combinations of texts, and cultures make the reader reevaluate the very concept of race, and its history in America. An enlightening and very entertaining read, I highly reccommend it. (I save 5 stars for classics)

Hilarious, dark, and perhaps the most unusual book I've read in a long time

The title of my review says it all. Great characters, great plot, great movement. Hilarious and fun at every turn, yet perfectly dramatic at others. A true masterpiece. Put it high on your reading list.

Opening the Family Cottage

The family cottage in Surface Rights is as much a character as any of the other eccentric and always interesting characters populating this instantly engaging northern Ontario story.

Verna sets off on a sad and solitary mission to her multi-generation family cottage near the fictional town of Greater Gammage near Timmins, Ontario. Travelling with her are the “cremains” of her twin sister, father, and ex-husband, and her father’s dog Jude, a very much alive Labrador retriever. Loaded down with family baggage, yet seemingly without a family, Verna must spread the ashes and prepare the cottage for sale.

So much for aloneness, and for sadness, when she meets kind-hearted, wise and very large Carmen, the cottage real estate agent. In typical small-town fashion, Carmen notifies others that Verna, a member of the Macoun clan, is in the area, and this gets the ball rolling. Winonah, a First Nations handywoman, pays a visit during one of Verna’s blistering hangovers, and brings along her brother, who isn’t all there - turns out, he’s a ghost. The cottage begins to swell with visitors, human, or ghostly, and sometimes unwanted - it becomes a magnet for damaged and suffering souls.

At the heart of the story are the circumstances surrounding the mysterious death of Fern, Verna’s twin sister, and the unconventional, feckless life leading to it. Fern's three children, all from different fathers and living apart, arrive, and we learn the details of their complicated childhoods.

Verna faces hard truths about her relationship with her sister, her husband, and her propensity for booze. But for all the seriousness, Surface Rights is darkly funny, and fuelled by this unlikely group of characters and their crackling dialogue, the story sweeps along with surprises, humour and insight into complicated and very real human relationships.

The cottage in Surface Rights burgeons with family life, in all its complexity - sad, funny, ugly, terrifying, crazy, but ultimately filled with love.

Easy, entertaining, amusing read

Surface Rights has many of the elements that I look for when purchasing a book: a strong female lead, a cast of weird and wonderful supporting characters, and a story line (plus a couple of engaging subplots) that kept me guessing until the end. A bonus was the setting, a rundown family cottage in the wilderness, so dear and familiar to Canadian hearts. This is the type of novel to read beside a cozy fireplace, or dangling your feet off the pier in front of your own cottage.

Funny and odd and touching.

This is a beguiling novel, rich in character and with a deep vein of humor running throughout. It also becomes increasingly involving, as a story that begins with one lonely and despondent woman (and a dog) gradually widens its cast of characters to include a reunited family, some Native Americans, and a ghost or two.

About the Author
Amy Snow began working in the field of acupressure in 1976. She, along with Nancy Zidonis, is the co-founder and Director of Education of Tallgrass Animal Acupressure Institute which offers a comprehensive, (12 courses), certificate training program in equine, canine and feline acupressure worldwide. Amy is the co-author of three animal acupressure books and numerous articles published in national and international publications. She has studied Traditional Chinese Medicine and other healing arts. As Adjunct Faculty in the equine program at Hocking College Amy teaches two of their hands-on courses. A great book for all dog owners

Acu-Dog is an amazing resource that allows dog owners to help keep their dogs happy and healthy through the use of acupressure. There is a lot of very useful information that is presented clearly and concisely, with several charts and pictures to further help pet owners utilize acupressure effectively for their dogs. The specific condition segment is another great tool provided in this book. As an animal acupressurist I use this book as a trusted reference.

Helps Demystify TCM!

I have always been fascinated by Traditional Chinese Medicine but its many layers tended to make my head spin a bit. Acu-Dog helps take the mystery out of TCM with its easy-to-understand language about Chi, Yin and Yang, Meridians, Acupoints, using acupressure to help balance your dog to help and prevent dis-ease, and much, much more. An Excellent TCM Reference Book

As an equine acupressure practitioner and a dog lover, I find Acu-Dog a Guide to Canine Acupressure to be one of my most reliable reference books. I use it often as a review and for specific questions that arise. Traditional Chinese Medicine is a layered approach to health and the deeper one delves, the more layers present. This book is written in a way that makes the layers far less daunting and the information readily accessible. I love the photographs, clear diagrams, and the anatomical references for finding the acupressure points. The information is written in a clear and succinct way, making it user friendly to the reader new to Traditional Chinese Medicine, as well as the experienced acupressure practitioner. This is the reference book I reach for first.

More of a generic book on Goldfish

This is an ok book. It is just too generic for fish in general. What I wanted was a good introduction to the Ranchu hobby that could answer such questions as the real difference between a Lionhead and a Ranchu. Wen development and how to use techniques such as water depth to maximize the development of a show quality fish. Show standards and the difference between a side view and a top view fish. I wanted an in depth description of natural, hand and induced spawning techniques as well as frye development and culling criteria with pictures. I wanted a book for a true introduction to a specialty area of the fish hobby. The book just did not give enough specific information about Ranchu to make it worth more stars, actually less would be enough.
