Speaking of Genetics, by Jane Gitschier

These 22 interviews were conducted by University of California Professor Jane Gitschier for publication in the scientific journal PLoS Genetics over the past 5 years. Here these interviews are presented as a single, stand-alone collection for the first time. The collection makes a compelling read by capturing exhilarating moments of discovery on a wide range of genetic questions as recounted by the scientists themselves. We also hear from scientists whose careers have taken on a broader role a University president, a master teacher, an author, the founder of a company, and an explorer. Further perspective is provided by several non-scientists whose work helps frame our understanding and practice of genetics; these include a judge, a reporter, an administrator, and an historian of science. Together, this collection brings to life the practice and societal implications of contemporary genetics.

Review
The book is a collection of interviews......Each interview is essentially a transcribed conversation, and as such, gives the reader the feeling of sitting in on an evening gathering among friends. The researchers reveal not only the background behind their discoveries, but some of the details of their training and early years that will prove inspirational to scientists at all stages of their careers. --Choice

People do the science, and their stories add the oohs and aahs to the results. Sometimes they even help us to get a better grasp of their ideas. Jane Gitschier, a UCSF Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics, looked into these stories by conducting 22 interviews with people engaged in genetics. Through their anecdotes, written down in Speaking of Genetics, we get to know the human side of important events which took place over the last decades....the book offers the opportunity to immerse...into the events and eureka moments behind the big results....Jane Gitschier...makes good use of both her knowledge as a human geneticist and her interest in people's stories, conferring on the book an optimal combination of science and personal life. Her enthusiasm is contagious. --Lab Times

The usefulness of this volume lies in gathering these transcripts into a single, organized source. This collection could be valuable to researchers as motivational, or at least intriguing, stories of discovery or they could be employed to inspire interest in new biology students. In either case, the personal touch added by hearing from the researchers themselves conveys an energy and excitement often lacking in scientific publications. This appears to have been the goal of the author, as she explicitly states that her aim was to get other scientists to think about and discuss their own stories of scientific discovery. --The Quarterly Review of Biology

Chats with the Giants of Genetics
By M.E.T.
Have you ever wondered what the events were that led to some of the great discoveries in genetics and molecular biology? Have you ever wanted to meet some of your modern day scientific heroes and learn more about their life? Would you like on overview (or review) of some of the breakthroughs in the field of genetics? If the answer to any of these questions is yes, then this compilation of interviews with scientific giants by Jane Gitschier is for you. Dr. Gitschier, a well-known geneticist herself, picked a variety of scientists who made pivotal discoveries in genetics to interview. The list reads like a "who's who" in genetics and includes interviews with Mary Lyon for X-chromosome inactivation, Victor Ambros for RNA interference, David Botstein for mapping of disease genes, Tom Cech for RNA splicing, Evan Eichler for genome copy number variation, Sir John Sultson for large-scale genome sequencing, Shirley Tilghman for imprinting, and Neil Risch for population genetics. Almost all interviews were in person on the "scientist's home turf", and the way in which the interviews are recorded makes one feel as though one were in the room when the interviews were taking place. The stories as told by the scientific legends themselves provide a wonderful window into the context, heartbreak, unplanned turns, hard work, and serendipity that led these scientists to make these dogma changing findings. This book would make a great present for students and aficionados of genetics.

Genetics is Exciting
By BH
Speaking of Genetics is an uplifting book about scientists who devote themselves to unlocking the keys to the development of life. These interviews with geneticists make science exciting and the scientists come to life as people. For example, Rebecca Cern finds that all females descend from a maternal ancestor out of Africa, Jenny Graves solves the location of the male y gene in mammals using kangaroos, Judge Jones decides teaching evolution is constitutional because it is a scientific theory whereas intelligent design is not, Sir Alec Jeffreys discovers DNA "fingerprints" that identify individuals. He even solves a murder in England after developing the technique now used routinely for identification. Svante Paabo looks at neanderthal vs human genes, Tom Cech describes the mounting importance of RNA, and Spencer Wells studies the migration patterns of our ancestors by taking DNA samples from native people all over the world. Mary Lyon was one of the few women in the field before WWII but as the men took on soldiering roles, universities slowly opened up to women in science. Evan Eichler finds that no one has the perfect genome--we are made up of deletions, structural changes, and copy number variations in our genes--it's amazing any of us are "normal".

It's exciting to learn about the exchange of ideas and post doc's from one lab to another--it's a community exercise says Victor Ambrose, an RNA scientist, and the sharing of chemicals and ideas leads to new developments. The path to scientific knowledge is full of twists and turns, and it's fun to follow each scientist's story of discovery as they talk with Gitschier. I am not a scientist but an avid reader of Science Times so I didn't follow every detail but I loved reading about genetics in this book and came away feeling these scientists are amazing people.
