Great! ...but read it in order...

I’m happy about the release of this book, back to Camp Half Blood, and I admit the trip into Norse mythology was fun for a bit, but I’ve grown quite fond of our past protagonists and it was nice to have them back. One thing I would recommend, this book could be read on its own, without reading the others that have come before it, but I wouldn’t. There are some brief summaries of Camp Half-Blood and Camp Jupiter, but it talks about the outcome of those events. Also, the book takes place at the start of Riordian’s last book Magnus Chase, and you know that based on what Annabeth is doing, she’s in Boston.

The book has Percy for a bit in it, but then it is primarily focused on Apollo and a new demi-god Meg. Like many of Riordian’s past books, the origins of Meg are a bit of a mystery. Uh, I really have to say, there are some hysterical reference in the book that are not entirely based on the knowledge of children in the normal YA range. Shout-out to a Rocky Horror mention! Anyway, the book is enjoyable to read as all the others and is quick.

Apollo is on earth as a mortal, the oracles have stopped prophesizing and there are a lot of tie-in’s to other stories that will emerge in the future, in particular Leo. I was worried that Apollo would annoy me, but his arrogance is amusing, and he has some pretty interesting narratives on his fatherhood, especially being proud of his children’s vanity. As a condition of his time on earth he must serve a demi-God, which is an enjoyable paring to read about and the character of Meg is unique and very strong. There’s still more to learn about her background though, which I am excited for in the future.

I don’t want to give too much away, but the new threat is a bit different from the past and pertains to historical figures, not simply the Gods and Goddesses in the traditional sense. The entire story is told from Apollo’s perspective and it’s kind of nice to have on-going pop-culture references, even as recent as Alabama Shakes.

I highly recommend it! However, wait to read this after you’ve read the other Percy Jackson books!

If you like Rick's other books, you'll enjoy this

The Trials of Apollo Book One The Hidden Oracle by Rick Riordan is the start of a new Greek mythology series from middle grade staple Rick Riordan. This new series centres around the god Apollo, who has been stripped of his godly powers by his father, Zeus. Naturally, adventures and shenanigans ensue.

For me this read a little younger than the Heroes of Olympus series, more in line with Percy Jackson. Apollo’s human persona is aged 16, but he spends a lot of time hanging around with 13 year old Meg which naturally makes the feel of the book somewhat younger. Also, there is no emphasis at all on romantic relationships.

What I liked

Riordan’s writing style. After many series including Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Heroes of Olympus, Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard, Riordan’s light, witty style should be familiar to most readers. If you enjoyed the earlier books, you will certainly enjoy this one. They are very funny. I breezed through The Hidden Oracle in an afternoon. While it is not necessary to have read the earlier series, I would strongly recommend doing so before picking up this latest one. There are many references to characters and events from previous entries that, while not necessary to enjoy the story, are enhanced by knowledge of both of the other Olympian series.

The protagonist. I was amused by Apollo – his attitude and the circumstances he kept finding himself in. In theme it’s very similar to Marvel’s Thor movie in which a god becomes mortal but takes some time to adjust to his new situation. I enjoyed Apollo’s character development and how he changes throughout the course of the adventure. I do have some concerns if that level of character development can be sustained through the other four planned books in the series, but time will tell.

Catchups on our other favourite demigods. In this book we touch base with our heroes from the previous series. It was good to hear how Percy, Annabeth, Jason, Piper, Leo and the others are all getting on with their post Gaea lives.

What I didn’t like

Perhaps because this was aimed at a younger audience, at times it was a little formulaic, especially if you know the previous book. Still, it’s more than made up for by Riordan’s wit and humour.

In summary, if you’ve enjoyed the previous books, you will certainly enjoy The Trials of Apollo. I gave it four stars out of five.

Wow! Just wow.

This is one of the best books I have read. It was great that Rick kept Apollos arrogance but still made him realize that he had faults. I'm going to be real here and say that I was in tears on multiple occasions.

It was also great that he decided to let people like Leo and Calypso have the spot light instead of Percy and Annabeth. I was laughing so hard and some parts, I almost fell off the chair I was sitting on.

This is a book that you are going to want to read and will keep you on the edge of your toes waiting for the next one.

Interesting, but Biased Account of a Fascinating Figure.

There are certain historical figures that are nearly impossible to get to know in anything approaching an objective sense. Something about them compels us to a judgement. Julian the Apostate is one of those rare figures who forces us to react emotionally - no matter how objective we think we are. And our reaction often says more about who WE are, than about the object of our judgement.

Flavius Julianus was the last pagan Emperor of Rome. He briefly attempted to reverse the ongoing Christianization of the Roman Empire begun by his detested uncle, the Emperor Constantine. He failed miserably and died young, but his attempt to reverse the cultural tides of his day will always fascinate any who encounter Julian and his century.

Glen Bowersock's book is a classic example of 20th Century historical revisionism. The historical consensus concerning Julian since the time of Gibbon and Voltaire has been cautiously admiring on the whole. Bowersock seeks to reverse that consensus by reinterpeting the abundant historical evidence. In doing so his dislike of Julian is displayed on nearly every page. I can't go into detail here, but there are numerous instances in which the author achieves a "new" interpretation by placing the very worst construction on the evidence. In nearly every case he favors whatever presents Julian in the least favorable light. Nowhere is this more evident than in Bowersock's account of Julian's "usurpation" of the title of Augustus in 361. He strains every nerve to prove the mutiny of the soldiers was engineered by Julian and his friends and that they lied about it later, all against formidable evidence to the contrary.

That being said, this is an interesting book. The author does a good job introducing the historical context, and his scholarly account of the facts of Julian's life is lively. Read the darn thing, but do yourself a favor and read the best account ever written of Julian's reign, that contained in the Res Gestae of Ammianus Marcellinus. It is available in translation as a Penguin paperback. Ammianus served in Julian's army and was a balanced witness of the Apostate's good and bad qualities. Julian was a complex man. He was a soldier, emperor, scholar, orator, philosopher, even a political prisoner for some years, and a deeply religious pagan. He was also credulous, didactic, a fanatic, an egomaniac, and even a public nuisance upon occasion. In the end however, our very best witness, Ammianus, admired Julian greatly. I must confess, so do I.

Scholarly, Researched, Biased

I wanted to like this book. I really did. I'm not a massive fan of Julian like some of the other reviewers here are. I appreciate the man for what he was but I never idolized him as some sort of pagan crusader. Reading some of these reviews before I started the book I wasn't worried since so many of them seem to be slightly batty. Unfortunately, they're also right. I had to write an essay on Julian so I read a lot on him. There are several other biographies out there (The Last Pagan and The Emperor Julian are quite good) and they capture the man's essence better than Bowersock. Many of the books that I had to read, scholarly works included, insult this book pretty blatantly. Rowland Smith in his book 'Julian's Gods' spends several pages rebuking Bowersock's vision of Julian as a "pathological figure." He is polite enough not to mention him obviously by name, but a quick glance at the footnotes reveals that every time he criticizes this interpretation he is referencing Bowersock. The way in which Bowersock managed to compact all of Julian's life into 119 pages is by dismissing all of Julian's religious views as unimportant (You learn nothing except that he was pagan and fancied himself a philosopher), and skimming over anything that seems to his credit. Julian was, for example, unquestionably the most approachable emperor of the Fourth Century, largely because he based his style of rule on Rome's previous philosopher-king Marcus Aurelius. All that Bowersock says about this is something snide about how he seemed to see himself in everyone he admired, no matter how dissimilar.

I truly don't know what problem this guy has with Julian. Every time he has more than one source of information he goes with the most insulting or critical one. For example: on page 107 he describes how two martyrs (Bonosus and Maximilianus) were beheaded for not removing the Christian symbol from their standards whereas it is just as likely that they were actually executed for criticizing the Emperor just before battle. He took the heavily biased stories from the Christians and takes them at face value while dismissing the pagan ones. In a similar vein he takes his description for Julian's behavior from possibly his greatest enemy Gregory of Nazianzus and says that it is essentially true.

Some examples of bias from his own words include: "when Julian died, all Christians and many pagans received the news with relief." That's right off of page 1 and the point is very debatable. Certainly he doesn't have the evidence to prove that. Julian's writings are described as being "petulant and self-righteous" and filled with his "unsettling laughter." (13) "Like them [Lenin and Mao-Tse-Tung who he's comparing him to], Julian was neither gregarious nor, in the social sense of the term, even civilized." (20)

Essentially, the way that Julian is described is as a dull, humorless, cruel, ascetic, self-righteous, unprincipled, puritanical, savage, bigot. I am using only words that Bowersock himself applies to Julian throughout the course of the book. This is not the language of an unbiased historian. To anyone who doubts that these traits do not describe, or at least dominate, Julian need only read his own writings. He has written three books worth of various works from orations to letters to satires. How Bowersock can describe the author of the Caesars as a dull and humorless person is beyond me. Sure it's not sidesplittingly hilarious, but the tone is very lighthearted throughout and you can feel the tongue kept very much in cheek. Bowersock however, takes it as a serious expression of Julian's beliefs even though Julian himself describes it as a comic work. The same goes for the Beard-Hater. Although that one is rather more bitter it can hardly be described as a "hectoring, injured, [and] repetitive" work filled with "Julian's unsettling laughter."

Until I read these works for myself I had no reason to doubt that his interpretation was true. Now I can't even see hints of his belief. Please don't take my word for this. Read those books yourself. They reveal a lot about the man's character and they are sometimes very entertaining. They are available in Loeb editions (Volume I, Volume II, Volume III) which are kind of expensive, but they are probably available for free online as well. So do yourself a favor and skip this book. Read one of the other excellent biographies. 'The Last Pagan' is probably the most readable of the two. Or read the works of the contemporary historian Ammianus Marcellinus (Volume I, Volume II, Volume III) or Julian's friend Libanius (Orations, Volume I, Orations, Volume II). These books will provide you with a much more accurate glimpse of the man who has come down through history as Julian the Apostate.

Author all but ignores Julian's anti-Christian polemics.

I found the book thoroughgoing in biographic details on Julian's life. But particularly disappointing is the author's neglect of Julian's anti-Christian arguments, which make fascinating reading. Oddly, Bowersock ignores, in his Bibliography, the 3-volume set of Julian's writings published some years ago by Loeb Classics. This omission is especially galling since B. maintains many of J.'s writings are unavailable, but some he so characterizes ARE available in the Loeb volumes! Of particular interest was J.'s diatribe against the "Galilean," Jesus--which is found in Loeb, but all but ignored in Bowersock's book. This is perplexing to say the least.

This edition reproduces in its entirety the earliest English translation of the French orientalist Antoine Galland's Mille et une Nuits. This remained for over a century the only English translation of the story cycle, influencing an incalculable number of writers, and no other edition offers the complete text supplemented by full textual apparatus.

Absolutely love this book

I would have loved to buy the hard cover book with the big font size. But when comparing costs, this is absolutely worth for the money paid. Totally in love with this book. Love the writing style and it gives the feeling which it should give. This takes me to a wonderful world which I prefer to stay back. Unless you hate reading small size letters, I can recommend you to buy this. Even though this is an Oxford World's classic, its not hard for a kid to understand. Very interesting book. It has a good introduction section and other notes to explain the back ground to this stories and how it evolved. Its good to read for any child or adult who is interested in learning literature. As per my understanding this has all the stories of Arabian Nights. This has roughly 60 stories and covers all nights. You can read these and tell the stories to the kids until they sleep. I can rate this as excellent.

Greatest non-novel fiction of its century

Another reviewer commented on the fact that this is "less true" to the "original text" than a recent translation by a learned scholar.

Arguing over which manuscript of the Arabian Nights is the authoritative one is about as political as arguing over Bible manuscripts. It's also about as pointless. They're all good, though this is probably the most readable translation (devoid of the literal-ness of Haddaway and Burton's flowery language). The question you need to answer is what are you looking for?

If it's literature, especially the complex narrative framing that's enthralled writers for centuries, this is probably your best bet. If you're looking at it from the perspective of Orientalism as a discipline and post-colonial studies, definitely look at the Burton. If you're looking for an honest depiction of the work as an Arab cultural text or just like things a bit more sexed up, look at the Haddawy. Look them over and decide for yourself.

This is the manuscript with the stories most frequently associated with the 1001 Nights, and the most of them. It's more westernized than the recent Haddawy translation, comparatively more orientalized (though not egregiously like Burton's, which I find unreadable) and the longest. It's bowdlerized, yes, compared to the Burton and the Haddawy but it's still a significant text in its own right.

Personally, I would caution against the Haddawy, especially for writers interested in material or casual readers since the "original text" is missing most of the stories found in the Galland like Aladdin and Ali baba and the 40 thieves, the stories most often associated with Arabian Nights. They were mostly inserted much later than the manuscript Haddawy is working from. Just remember, there is not a single definitive version of a text this old. There are several. Each have relative merits, though the Burton doesn't hold up very well to casual reading.

Decide for yourself.

Buyer Beware

The publisher's description of this book is misleading. The translation dates from 1706-1721 but has been typographically modernized (e.g., long "s" that looks like "f" has been replaced). The blather about "textual apparatus" sounds scholarly but amounts to a few pages of notes, an appendix containing plot summaries of the selections represented in this translation, a glossary of foreign terms, and an index. The introduction is plodding, patched together from other introductions, and tendentious.

Example: "For [Scheherazade] ... story-telling is nothing less than a matter of life and death. Again and again in the collection we encounter individuals whose lives depend upon the responses of their listeners to their tales. If, in the frame story which structures the entire body of narratives, for example, Scheherazade fails to persuade the sultan Schahriar to rescind his pledge to execute each of his new wives on the morning following their marriage, she will not only forfeit her own life, but effectively will be Schahriar's accomplice in sentencing an untold number of young women to a similar fate." The heroine's failure would make her an accomplice in murder? I think not. The point of the frame story is that she does indeed succeed in delaying Schahriar's demented vengeance and ultimately cures him of his psychopathy. Whether this is realistic is beside the point: it's a story.

The translation in this edition was extensively bowdlerized, making funny, bawdy, and fairly raw stories suitable for reading by gentlewomen of early 18th century England. This translation of the French Galland translation (1704-1721) from the Arabic has historical interest as the most widely available version of the "Nights" in English throughout the 18th century, but if you are looking for a good, honest translation of these wonderful stories, this is not it. I suggest the translation by Husain Haddawy, which is varied, strange, and wonderful, but not for the squeamish.

Prof. Radvansky received his B.A. from Cleveland State University under the supervision of Mark Ashcraft and Ben Wallace, and his MA. and PhD from Michigan State University in 1992 under the supervision of Rose T. Zacks. He has been a faculty member in the Department of Psychology at the University of Notre Dame since 1993. He is an expert in human memory with over 80 publications. He has served as associated editor for the journals Memory & Cognition, the Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology, Collabra, and Frontiers in Psychology.
