Lawrence J. About the Author
Lawrence W. Reed has served as president of the Foundation for Economic Education since September 1, 2008. Prior to that, he was president for twenty years of the Mackinac Center for Public Policy in Midland, Michigan. Reed has authored over 1,000 columns and articles dozens in newspapers, magazines and journals in the U. S. and abroad, as well as five books. He has lectured in dozens of nations. Reed’s articles have appeared in The Wall Street Journal, Christian Science Monitor, USA Today, Baltimore Sun, Detroit News and Detroit Free Press, among many others. His interests in political and economic affairs have taken him to 72 countries on six continents. He holds a B.A. degree in Economics from Grove City College (1975) and an M.A. degree in History from Slippery Rock State University (1978), both in Pennsylvania. He holds two honorary doctorates from Central Michigan University (Public Administration—1993) and Northwood University (Laws—2008). He is a member of the Mont Pelerin Society and is an adviser to numerous organizations around the world. A full bio is available at FEE.org and on Wikipedia. Burt Folsom is a professor of History at Hillsdale College, a senior fellow in economic education for the Mackinac Center for Public Policy, and senior historian for the Foundation for Economic Education. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh. His B.A. and M.A. degrees in history are from Indiana University and the University of Neb raska, respectively. Folsom has published many articles and books, including the widely acclaimed The Myth of the Robber Barons. His two most recent books are New Deal or Raw Deal? How FDR’s Economic Legacy Damaged America and FDR Goes to War: How Expanded Executive Power, Spiraling National Debt and Restricted Civil Liberties Shaped Wartime America. He lectures widely throughout the U.S. and is a regular speaker at FEE's summer seminars for college students.

A brilliant book!

Get ready for an education. In my opinion this is a must read for all liberty lovers out there!
This book covers history and economics and both are largley misunderstood by most people today.
For example, it reveals the true costs of the Civil War and the mistakes Lincoln made promoting unconstitutional internal improvements like railroads, canals and roads. The book takes on the differences of the principles of charity and government redistribution of wealth.
After reading the book, one will understand the greatness of President Cleveland and how he resisted power and enforced the proper role of government.
Inflation, free markets, fiat money, property rights and so many more subjects are covered in an easy-to-understand way of reading. I don't think anyone who will try to refute this book will be able to do so without resorting to ad hominems.
The authors take economics and historical approaches to the topic of our Founders' political philosophy, convincingly making a central case that the government is to be a protector of liberty instead of the unrestrained agent of coercion.
At a crucial time in our country's history, this book should be read by every American.

Changing the Course of Events

The authors state in the preface, "we recognize that both economics and history must be more than numbers. That's why many of the offerings here focus on the interesting contributions of people who changed the course of events."

I have not been a life time proponent of freedom. In truth, I would have been an more outspoken advocate of liberty much earlier had I come in contact with a book like this. One thing I am learning about freedom, it is not enough to simply understand it, one must be able to communicate it with simple and inspiring stories. Reed and Folsom are experts. Their articles are short, well written and inspiring. Just what is needed to support a growing movement and help folks like me continue to tell the story. Books like this are valuable in that "they put the cookies on the lower shelf" and help me to become one who can "change the course of events."

Commonsense look at economics and government

In the past I have enjoyed books written by both authors. This one is no exception. With solid examples the authors easily point out the pros of business versus the cons of big government. The book even touches on why the Austrian Economic Theory works and why Keynesian Theory doesn't. Overall, the book is a refreshing look at the interconnection between economics, entrepreneurship, and government.

As such, the Qur an of 7th century CE Arabia and the Pryamid Texts of Old Kingdom Egypt (2686 BCE 2181 BCE) are both scriptures and equally important pieces of the puzzle of truth. journal entries, notes, addresses, and seventy thousand letters. Jefferson remains one of the country's most extraordinary figures;

Jefferson the " American Mind"

This study is a wonderful compilation of the life and writings of Thomas Jefferson. The introduction by Koch and Peden of Jefferson's long and fruitful life is rich and complete. Jefferson's greatness shines forth in the pages of this volume. His Anas, Autobiography, Essay of the Anglo Saxon language, Notes on Virginia, And his numerous public papers and letters show the reader the depth of this great man. Koch and Peden clearly admire Jefferon which is a welcome respite from the sad and anti-intellectual deconstructionist philosophy of modern historians. No PC here. For a student of Jefferson, or someone attempting to familiarize themselves with his ideals, this is a great buy!

A Look into the mind of Jefferson

Because the letters and other writings have been written in the English of Jefferson's time, the book is somewhat difficult to read. I had to read it slowly to take in Jefferson's ideas and feelings. The book includes the Declaration of Independence which spells out the reasons for the American colonies to declare independence from Britain. Jefferson's letters to John Adams are included as well. Adams and Jefferson were long time friends but became disconnected later in their lives. Finally, they make amends close to the end of their lives. There are also letters to a French woman who Jefferson was in love with while he was Ambassador to France. One of the most interesting concepts was Jefferson's idea of the separation of church and state. Jefferson believed that the religion should not intermingle in the affairs of the state. As Ambassador to France, Jefferson learned about the problems of authoritarian rule of a king over the common people. Jefferson was appalled at the poor representation and meager powers of the civilians of France compared to the powers of the King of France. Overall, this book is a good inside look at the ideals, beliefs, and feelings of one of the founding fathers of the United States.

We added this book to our library when I was doing research for a doctoral project on Racism. In one volume, is Jefferson's autobiography, travel journals, essays, biographies of other historical figures, notes and correspondence. It is a wealth of material into a foundation stone personality of our American identity.
Lately Jefferson has drawn fire because of his position on slavery and his philandering activities as a plantation owner. Still, within this volume you can observe the full story historical context provides.
In my favorite passage in connection with the slavery issue he writes,
"And can the liberties of a nation be though secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of thepeople that these liberties are the gift of God? That they are not to be violated but with His wrath? Indeed I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just; that his justice cannot sleep forever; that considering numbers,nature and natural means only, a revolution of the wheel of fortune, an exchange of situation is among possible events; that it may become probably by supernatural interference! The Almighty has no attribute which can take side with us in such a contest." (Notes on Virginia, Query XVIII; p. 278 Modern Library Edition)
I think every family should have a copy of this volume in their library. It is enlightening, powerful and life changing material.
