Useful With An Asterisk...

But so are most books of this type. The book's best feature is a nice combination of detail with theory. There are lots of exercises and a generally cheery "you can do it!" tone. That's good, but the book's recurring emphasis on developing multi-modal approaches to problem-solving is better (i.e., creativity means trying approaches you're not as familiar with). Concluding sections on interacting with people of dominant types that differ from you, and how to sell your ideas to them, is probably worth the cover price alone.

The author loves examples. These examples are not always correct (salons peaked in the 1700s, not the "seventeenth century" to cite one of more than a dozen examples), nor do they fit as neatly into their creative categories as the author supposes. In part, though, the reader comes to see this as the unique characteristics of a certain creative style--seeing this and making allowance for it is good practice for the rest of the book. After all, true creativity is aware of variant creative modes, especially in colleagues or even competitors.

The morning after skimming the entire book I began to experiment with some of its suggestions. Within two hours I had come up with a metaphor that will solve one of the most intractable process problems for my company--an idea that literally took my breath away, on something I'd been struggling with for months. I put a lot of work in; this book didn't give me any answers. But in a sense it reminded me of the answer, or gave me ideas about how and where to look for the answer. I was a college football player already, to use a metaphor, and this was a long look at a pro playbook. It won't work unless you're playing college ball; if you're a top pro player, you should look at something more advanced. But if you want to develop a basis of creative talent, this'll help.

Interesting perspectives on creative thinking styles

This book starts off a quick pr�cis of the 5 faces : Seer, Observer, Alchemist, Fool, Sage. Then it gives a self-assessment of which Styles you are currently using. I scored highest on Fool & Observer, and lowest on Sage.
As I read through the book, I was disillusioned as to its worth. But when I got to Fool, I thought "that's me exactly" (there's no shame in being a 'Fool' in this schema).
So I looked back at the earlier chapters, and thought maybe the questions & examples were not as appropriate as they might have been?
Anyway, I began to appreciate the book more. Certainly the latter sections on how to apply the 5 different styles at work, and the strengths & weaknesses of teams who find themselves with & without all these players, were of more use than the theorising.
There are other books offering rival schemas, but I think this one is as good as any of the others, and easier to read.

If you are interested in understanding your kind of genius, this book is for you. The different faces are well articulated and the knowledge of the distinctive attributes of each one is a good for metacognition. This book has helped several of my students and friends discover more about themselves as learners. A must-read for those who want to discover more about how their respective mind/genius is configured.

A super quick, super cute twist on the idea of the traditional Cinderella tale

After finishing THE MYSTERY PRINCE, I’ll admit I was pretty disappointed. Really, Mary? You couldn’t go ahead and make it a full length novel? I mean come on, at least make it a collection and continue the story!

Seriously though, Mary’s novella was a super quick, completely twisted spin on the tale of Cinderalla. I knew it would be cute when I read the summary, and I wasn’t disappointed.

Anyway, it wouldn’t be a Psychocat Reads Review without running THE MYSTERY PRINCE through the usual criteria.

The Characters: Given the short period of time you have to develop characters in a novella, Mary did a fantastic job. I felt like I was able to get to know Zoe, Tristan, and Nor very quickly. The kings and Prince Rand were a bit slower to figure out, but as more secondary characters that made sense. I’ve always loved the Nor (or Nor equivalent) in the Cinderella tales, so I was glad Mary didn’t forego that in her new version.

The Relationships: The story is a fairy tale, so the idea of love at first sight completely works well. To me though, the pieces that made the story more endearing is the obvious affection between Zoe and Tristan and the people they are surrounded by. It was clear throughout that pair of them weren’t in this alone.

Too Perfect of Perfectly Flawed: As noted above, the story is a fairy tale, so I don’t expect the same level of human flaws as I do in story based more in reality. That said, Mary didn’t make her characters completely perfect, and that made the story even better.

Final Rating: 5 STARS! This is a super quick, super cute twist on the idea of the traditional Cinderella tale. As I mentioned in the intro, I’d love it if Mary continued Zoe and Tristan’s tale, maybe even throw in some more of what was going on with Prince Rand.

Fun to read.

What a fun story! Mary Waibel has given us a different take on the Cinderella story that gives us hope of "love at first sight". Even in this short novella, Mary was able to spin a tale that makes us care about the characters and follow in their quest to find their true love.

I loved Princess Zoe. She was smart, courageous, and confident. The king has given her a time-limit to find a husband or he will arrange a marriage for her. Noe want her happy ever after, and agrees to a masked ball where she will meet all the eligible Princes, but how can you fall in love after dancing with someone for only 15 minutes? Tristan is only at the ball because Prince Rand, who he protects, falls ill and the king asks him to attend in place of the prince. Nor, a friend of the king and very gifted in wisdom and knowledge, joins Tristan and the adventure begins.

My favorite scene was of Tristan and Zoe in the garden. That is when you get to really know and care about their story.

I enjoyed this story but would have loved it to be a full book and let the characters squirm even more. As a hero, Tristan fell a little short with his lack of confidence but his insight and consideration of others won me over.. We see just a glimpse of Prince Rand and I would also like to know more about his story, maybe in a future book. I would definitely look forward to reading this author again.

A fun read for fans of royals and romance

Princess Zoe must find a prince to marry. Instead of an arranged marriage her father has agreed to allow her time to find someone she might possibly love. The eligible princes are invited to a masquerade ball in order for her to meet each of them.

Prince Rand is ill and his father sends Rand’s guard, Tristan, in his place. Tristan and Rand grew up together and even look alike. I loved this aspect of the story, because I have a life long friend myself and, yes, we look alike and are always mistaken for sisters.

Tristan and Zoe feel an immediate connection with each other. Though Tristan is there to secure Rand’s place at Zoe’s side, once his feelings surface he realizes he doesn’t want to do that and he leaves her without sharing his name, or Rand’s. Instead he leaves her with a memento – a navigation device.

Determined to find the man who gave her the device, she sets out on a journey that reunites her with not only her mystery prince, but also Prince Rand. Faced with the look alike men, she isn’t certain which one was the masked gentleman she met at the dance.

I don’t want to tell you more and ruin the fun. The Mystery Prince wove together some of my favorite story aspects, discovery and a journey. Mary Waibel is very good at creating heart-fluttering moments. If you like a sweet romance, this is a good one for you.

A Jewel to Understand Object Orientation & its Applications

I teach Object Oriented Analysis and Design in a University in Pakistan. I taught this course two times before and I am teaching this course third time. I happend to come across this book in a book store. It seems good to me, I bought it. In my point of view it is the best starting book on this topic. Now I am using this as my text book for teaching the course. Previoulsy, I had to consult so many books to make students understand the history, purpose and meaning of object orientation. I did a lot of research. I consulted OMT by Rambaugh, OOAD with applications by Booch, OOSE by Jackobson then Applying UML by Graig Larman, Applying Use cases and so on. After seeing this book, I believe, all my problems have been solved. It is concise, to the point and comprehensive starter to understand this subject.
I would strongly recommend this book to those people who are new in this area and want to have a strong grip on the subject.
Last but not the least, excercises at the end are very helpful.

Good book for general description of OOAD

This is a good book for a very general overview of object oriented systems development. It does not refer to any particular language, so I don't know why the other reviewer said it included C++. This book is good but a better book is Criag Larman's "Applying UML and Patterns".

Great Cigar Book, Not as Much for a Pipe Enthusiast.

This book is a great read for the beginner and veteran alike. I recently started smoking cigars about a year ago and was looking to educate myself. This book provides a great foundation for cigar smokers and a tiny bit about pipe tobacco and pipes. This is a very easy read and I had read it cover to cover within a few days of it arriving at my doorstep. It is a good book for reference, a reread, coffee table, and a great gift for those that have a love for Lady Tobacum. If you're looking for a well rounded base for the knowledge of cigars, then buy this book in tandem with "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Cigars - by Tad Gage."

Further, if you're looking to be a certified tobacconist (http://www.tobacconistuniversity.org), then this is the suggested handbook for that certification. I've not taken the test(s), but I'd have to imagine that you should have some experience beyond just reading this book. In addition, you may want to read the aforementioned book, and purchase a book that targets pipes and pipe tobaccos.

If you're looking for a pipe smoking or pipe tobacco book, this isn't for you if that is your main interest. I'm not versed in pipes or associated tobacco, but it did provide a simple introduction to this world and I did learn things I never knew.

Review of The Tobacconist Handbook by LMS

I previewed the book at my local tobacconist-smoking club, and realized that I knew little technical information. I recommend the book for any serious cigar smoker. I have been smoking cigars for 64 years. I especially liked the author's discussion about the "flavors " of cigars. On a recent trip to Cuba in March, 2013 we were hosted by an official of one of the world's most famous cigar makers. I asked him about the "flavors" of cigars-hints of coffee, chocolate, citrus, etc. etc. His reply ,"Larry, our cigars taste like tobacco." The book supports that same notion. I now feel no guilt when a good cigar yields me "just tobacco."

I plan to take the consumer certification course soon.

Thank you for the opportunity to learn more and to make my cigar smoking experience even more enjoyable.

Good for the Beginner and Enthusiast Alike

I bought this because a friend of mine was taking his test as a employee of a cigar shop and said it had a few interesting facts that even he didn't know. I'm a 35+ year cigar smoker and I keep this in my cigar room to stimulate conversation amongst my friends as we smoke cigars and talk. We each read a bit as we pass it around from chair to chair and it brings up topics & explainations that most cigar smokers don't know. I learned quite a few things from this book myself and those that say it's amateurish are totally off base. Every level of cigar smoker can learn a thing or two from this well written book that is easy to read and is just the thing to impress your cigar buddies with your new found expertise next time you meet up to burn a few! If you are serious about cigars, why not own the handbook that pretty much sums up all the nuts & bolts of growing, selecting the leaves, storing the tobacco, rolling, aging, and smoking cigars?

It Takes Two: Strategic Intelligence and National Security Policy

In the U.S., the relationship between strategic intelligence and the formulation of national security policies has been to say the least complex and often confusing. This book provides what has long been needed, an objective and scholarly review of this relationship.

Rovner provides an excellent theoretical background to guide his examination of specific case histories that he has chosen to illustrate the relationships between strategic intelligence and policy. Ideally intelligence analysts should be able to operate without interference to produce strategic intelligence reports that are honest, objective, and supported by the best information available. Again ideally policy makers should be free to challenge such reports. Finally both analysts and policymakers should be able to hold rational discussions over differences in interpretation and conclusions in which the supporting evidence is considered objectively. Unfortunately this ideal is often thwarted by what Rovner calls "the pathologies of intelligence-policy relations." He has identified three such `pathologies': 1) neglect-policy makers ignore intelligence that does not fit their assumptions; 2) politicalization-the most egregious of the pathologies and one that has several different forms; and 3) excessive harmonization - intelligence analysts and policymakers are in such close agreement that they fail to critically scrutinize their conclusions. In the course of his discussion, Rovner also makes an interesting observation about secrecy. Secrecy he notes can be used by intelligence agencies as a source of power and as a means to support dubious analysis. Policymakers can use secrecy to support dubious policy decisions by implying that there classified evidence supporting their conclusions.

In any event Rovner provides case studies from the Vietnam War, the ongoing controversy of Soviet Military capability and intentions, and Operation Iraqi Freedom. These case studies accurately illustrate the pathologies hampering of productive intelligence-policymaker relations. Rovner does not assign blame but explains how this relationship got off track.

Originally, U.S. Strategic intelligence was largely produced by the Office of National Estimates (ONE) of CIA from 1947 through 1972. ONE was an in house CIA operation whose main analytic arm was the powerful Board of National Estimates (BNE) under the legendary Sherman Kent. BNE actually produced very good strategic intelligence which was often ignored by policymakers. For example as the U.S. moved toward ever greater commitments in South Vietnam based on the so-called "domino theory", it BNE that produced two estimates pointing out that this theory was hopelessly flawed. They were ignored, but were nonetheless presented good intelligence. President Nixon decided that ONE was too independent and ordered it disbanded and replaced with the more politically pliable National Intelligence Council (NIC) and a system of National Intelligence Officers who could be political appointees. This began the long process of decline of the U.S. ability to produce accurate strategic intelligence.
