About the Author

Richard Niemiec is an Oracle Ace Director and one of only six originally honored Oracle Certified Masters worldwide. He was a co-founder and the CEO of TUSC, a Chicago-based systems integrator of Oracle-based business solutions. Rich currently serves as an Executive Advisor to Rolta International Board of Directors and has served as President of Rolta TUSC and Rolta EICT. TUSC was the Oracle Partner of the Year in 2002, 2004, 2007, 2008, and 2010 (Rolta TUSC). Rich is the past President of the International Oracle Users Group (IOUG) and the current President of the Midwest Oracle Users Group (MOUG). He is the bestselling author of Oracle Databasa 10g Performance Tuning Tips & Techniques, and he was inducted into the Entrepreneurship Hall of Fame in 1998.

Good but not perfect

The book is aimed at "helping beginner and intermediate Oracle professionals" (page 2). Presumably that means knowledge equivalent to OCA or OCP qualifications. For the intended market it should be excellent, if (like me) you are OCM, you will learn not that much. But there are some issues.
The good stuff first: chapters 2 (indexes), 6 (explain plan), 7 (hints), 8 (query tuning), 9 (joins), 10 (pl/sql), 11 (parallelism only - ignore the stuff about Exa% and RAC, they can't be covered in just a few pages), 12 (v$ views) and 13 (x$ tables) are excellent and make the book worth the price. They get it the 4 star rating.
Some other chapters (and the 3 appendices) may be interesting, but they aren't essential reading: chapters 1 (new features), 5 (Enterprise Manager), 15 (a system review method), and 16 (some Unix commands).
Three remaining chapters are good, but have problems. Chapter 3 on discs and ASM does go on about placing files on different discs to eliminate contention. This is dreadfully old fashioned, and I assume has been copied from previous versions of the book. I hope everyone knows that best practice is to stripe all your file systems across all your discs. Chapter 4 (initialization parameters) is also out of date: it goes on about tuning with hit ratios, which is very 20th century. Chapter 14 (AWR and Statspack reports) is good as far as it goes, but it misses a critical topic: there is no mention of DB Time and v$sys_time_model, even though this is the first part of a report that many DBAs will go to.
Now the bad stuff. First, the technical editing is poor. All authors make mistakes (I certainly do) and the tech editors are meant to catch them. Just a few incontrovertible examples:
Page 4, the description of Exadata storage indexes is wrong, "...which cells need to be accessed..." should read "...which blocks need to be accessed..." Pages 21,22 include an example of code to set up a flashback data archive, which ends with a query that can't work because it projects a column that isn't in the table. On page 334, the first example can't work because the hint is missing the table name. There are many more like this, I'll send all the ones I spotted to McGraw-Hill for inclusion in the errata sheet. Things like this are not trivial, they can be confusing or misleading. Be sure to download the errata.
Second, the bad one: the author is wrong on how redo is generated. Page 147 gives a description of redo which suggests that only committed changes and changes to undo segments generate redo, but that uncommitted changes do not. Page 782 compounds the error by suggesting that redo is no longer written to disc in near-as-damnit real time (and of course it is real time on commit), and page 866 makes it even worse by saying that whole blocks (not change vectors) go to the log buffer (as in release 5, perhaps?). Related to this is the wrong description of the log_buffer parameter (page 204, repeated on 1004) which states that the log buffer is used for "uncommitted transactions in memory". It also says incorrectly that you cannot set the parameter in an spfile. Understanding redo is critical, and is why I chopped a point off the score.
So overall, the book is good, but read it with your eyes open.

Comprehensive Guide for Developers and DBAs

You'll find plenty of examples of techniques to use when tuning for Oracle Database 11g Release 2 performance, especially at the command line level. However, the book also does a credible job of providing examples of tuning using Enterprise Manager. It clearly lays out which chapters that will be especially relevant for DBAs, developers, or both, and at what level of expertise (from beginner to advanced). Exadata users will find a chapter devoted to this topic including the unique features available on that platform. This is a must have book for DBAs that want a single resource to go to when faced with a performance issue.

Essential Tools for any Oracle Professional

This book is an essential tool that should be in every Oracle Professional's bookcase. It has value as a reference to fix performance issues that are currently present or as a study guide to take a beginner/intermediate DBA and/or Developer to an expert. Rich Niemiec brings performance tuning down from a mystical art down to a science with each topic covered concisely and thoroughly with clear instructions on how to implement them. Readers of previous versions of this book have a section that documents how each chapter has been updated. My favorite chapter is the one on Exadata as it really brought it home for me. It is a great tuning reference for developers, also it is one very few books cover the rare V$ views, X$ tables including how to query them.

I highly recommend this book especially for everyone looking to get the most out of their hardware. Why pay for new hardware when you can dramatically improve the performance of your current one using the information contained in this book?

About the Author
Dr. Philip Lanzkowsky was born in Cape Town on March 17, 1932 and graduated high school from the South African College and obtained his MB ChB degree from the University of Cape Town School of Medicine in 1954 and his Doctorate degree in 1959 for his thesis on Iron Deficiency Anemia In Children. He completed a pediatric residency at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital in Cape Town in 1960. After working in Pediatrics at the University of Edinburgh and at St Mary’s Hospital of the University of London, Dr. Lanzkowsky did a pediatric Hematology-Oncology fellowship at Duke University School of Medicine and at the University of Utah.

In 1963 he was appointed Consultant Pediatrician and Pediatric Hematologist to the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital at the University of Cape Town and introduced Pediatric Hematology and Oncology as a distinct discipline. In 1965 he was appointed Director of Pediatric Hematology and Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the New York Hospital-Cornell University School of Medicine.
In 1970 he was appointed Professor of Pediatrics and Chairman of Pediatrics at Long Island Jewish Medical Center and established a division of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology which he directed until 2000. He was the founder of the Schneider Children’s Hospital, which he developed, planned, and was the hospital’s Executive Director and Chief of Staff from its inception in 1983 until 2010.

Dr. Lanzkowsky has received numerous honors and awards and has lectured extensively at various institutions and medical schools in the United States and around the world. In addition to having been the author of five editions of the Manual of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology used by clinicians worldwide, he is the author of How It All Began: The History of a Children’s Hospital and over 280 scientific papers, abstracts, monographs, and book chapters.

Dr. Lanzkowsky’s medical writings have been prodigious. His seminal contributions to the medical literature have included the first description of the relationship of pica to iron-deficiency anemia (Arch. Dis Child., 1959), Effects of timing of clamping of umbilical cord on infant’s hemoglobin level (Br. Med. J., 1960), Normal oral D-xylose test values in children (New Engl. J. Med., 1963), Normal coagulation factors in women in labor and in the newborn (Thromboses at Diath. Hemorr., 1966), Erythrocyte abnormalities induced by malnutrition (Br. J. Haemat., 1967), Radiologic features in iron deficiency anemia (Am. J. Dis. Child., 1968), Isolated defect of folic acid absorption associated with mental retardation (Blood, 1969; Am. J. Med, 1970), Disaccharidase levels in iron deficiency (J. Pediat., 1981) and Hexokinase “New Hyde Park” in a Chinese kindred (Am. J. Hematol., 1981).

Jeffrey M. Lipton, MD, PhD is the Chief of Hematology/Oncology and Stem Cell Transplantation at the Steven and Alexandra Cohen Children’s Medical Center of New York and Center Head, Patient Oriented Research, The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research. He is Professor, Elmezzi Graduate School of Molecular Medicine, The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research and Professor of Pediatrics and Molecular Medicine at the Hofstra North Shore - LIJ School of Medicine. He holds a B.A. from Queens College, City University of New York, a Ph.D in Chemistry from Syracuse University and an M.D. degree, magna cum laude, from Saint Louis University Medical School. He did his Pediatric residency training at the Children’s Hospital, Boston, MA and his Pediatric Hematology/Oncology fellowship training at the Children’s Hospital and the Sidney Farber Cancer Institute (now DFCI) in Boston. Dr. Lipton is a Past-President of the American Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology (ASPHO). His main interest is bone marrow failure.

Jonathan D. Fish, MD is Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine. He is Director of the Survivors Facing Forward Program, a long-term follow-up program for survivors of childhood cancer, in the division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology and Stem Cell Transplantation at the Steven and Alexandra Cohen Children’s Medical Center of New York. He holds a B.A., with distinction, from the University of Western Ontario and received his M.D. degree, magna cum laude, from the Upstate Medical Center of the State University of New York. He did his Pediatric training at the the Schneider Children’s Hospital, New Hyde Park, NY ( Presently known as the Steven and Alexandra Children’s Medical Center of New York) and completed his Pediatric Hematology-Oncology fellowship training at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Dr. Fish received the American Society of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology Young Investigator Award in 2008. His clinical and research interest is on the late effects of childhood cancer treatment and survivorship care.

Helpful info for infosec professionals

Phishing is simply about someone sending out emails inviting you to `update your details', right? Well, yes ... and no. This book ably demonstrates that there is rather more to it than that. Authors Rachael Lininger and Russell Dean Vines explain the basics and then go on to lift the covers on a seedy underworld where criminal hackers combine social engineering and fraud techniques with spyware, rootkits and other tricks to exploit vulnerabilities in email readers and Internet browsers.

Phishing is essentially a detailed security awareness text focusing on phishing and identity theft. Its main aim is to enable the reader to identify and avoid phishing emails and websites, with secondary objectives being to raise awareness of spyware and other forms of malware, and to advise those who have already swallowed the phisher's bait.

The two chapters giving advice for financial services and similar companies whose customers are being phished are fairly weak, but to be fair there is not a huge amount they can do. Two chapters of advice for ordinary computer users go well beyond the usual `watch out for phishing emails', covering aspects such as antivirus and patching.

The following audiences are identified:

- Incident response teams at financial institutions

- Information security professionals and management

- Executive management of any company whose brand might be spoofed

- Everyone who uses the Internet

Phishing is quite a long and specific book that seems unlikely to be read by many non-technical readers, despite its laudable aims. The professional readership will benefit from this book.

Rachael Lininger is billed as a `technical writer in the information security department of a major US financial institution'. It is clear from her writing that she has written up a lot of phishing attacks before.

Russel Dean Vines is a well-qualified information security consultant and cyber-counterterrorism specialist as well as an accomplished jazz musician.

Although the topics are quite technical in places, the book treads a fine line between oversimplifying things and delving too deeply. Rachael's sections include some very welcome tongue-in-cheek asides and even the odd Monty Python reference to brighten up an otherwise rather dry topic. There are plenty of examples of phishing emails, analyzed down to the level of the HTML code, and URLs for more information.

Although things are moving rapidly in this field, Phishing remains relevant and useful two years or more after it was written. The authors' experience evidently qualified them to take a forward-looking perspective. This should definitely be on the bookshelf of the information security department at any eBusiness.

Excellent Cover-the-Basics on Phishing Scams

I was browsing through computer security oriented books recently (May 2005) at a large national book chain. I went through the indexes in the back of the books to see how often or not the category "Phishing" was referenced. It was very few.

I then stumbled across this book. It is very informative to those who are only vaguely familiar with this big scam. The authors even provide sample text and code that phishers have regularly used. As noted in the book, in the earlier days, the phishers often used poorly constructed English in their spam, but the scam has grown in its own sophistication. The authors provide also very clear terminology in regards to this scam, such as the difference between the terms: phish, vs. phishing vs. phishing sites vs. phishing email. They also provide help to those who have fallen for the phishing scams. The authors give the reader step by step instructions on how to go to the police to file a report and to report the issue to the ISP.

The authors are very correct, this problem of phishing is only going to grow larger as a problem online despite making more people aware of it and the unknown backend battle against it by the ISPs. Luckily magazines like Readers' Digest and Newsweek have had occasional articles on phishing. I can only hope spreading more of such awareness minimizes more attacks against unsuspecting users online who are defrauded.

I work in a field where I attempt to minimize phishing scams. I found that such attacks have seemed to increase over the past year. A good starter site for such information is: antiphishing.org the Anti-Phishing Working Group's website. The phishers typically attack by compromising webservers with outdated OSes and/ or setting up fraudulent hosting accounts with stolen credit cards.

In my own forensic research from time to time with phishing scams on infected webservers, that often the culprits setting up the phishing sites are originating from IPs in foreign countries, notably North Africa and Eastern Europe. The only draw back to this book I can think of is I wish the book had more information pulled from ISPs themselves who fight this serious scam.

It used to be I'd see one or two "requests" a week to update my personal information for places like eBay or Citibank. Now it's closer to two or three a day. I'm well aware that these phishing attempts are scams meant to commit identity theft, but apparently we internet-savvy people are in the minority. Lininger and Vines have written a very readable and understandable guide to phishing that can easily be given to nearly anyone to help them protect themselves. The uninitiated will quickly grasp the idea that they shouldn't be responding to emails like these, and as a result they'll be much safer. People who are internet-savvy will learn the tricks that are used by the phishers to make links appear to be something other than what they truly are. Even organizations can benefit from the chapters on what they should do if they find that their servers have been co-opted to run a phishing scam.

Very practical material with the benefit of being a book that's fun to read. This is information that needs to be in the hands of all internet users these days...

About the Author

Tom Strachan is Scientific Director of the Institute of Human Genetics and Professor of Human Molecular Genetics at Newcastle University, UK, and is a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. Tom's early research interests were in multigene family evolution and interlocus sequence exchange, notably in the HLA and 21-hydroxylase gene clusters. While pursuing the latter, he became interested in medical genetics and disorders of development. His most recent research has focused on developmental control of the vertebrate cohesion regulators Nipbl and Mau-2.

Andrew Read is Emeritus Professor of Human Genetics at the University of Manchester, UK and a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences. Andrew has been particularly concerned with making the benefits of DNA technology available to people with genetic problems. He established one of the first DNA diagnostic laboratories in the UK over 20 years ago (it is now one of two National Genetics Reference Laboratories), and was founder chairman of the British Society for Human Genetics, the main professional body in this area. I am a geneticist and an undergraduate level professor. I absolutely love this book. It is so clearly written, up to date and full of references, so it feels more like a review (which I hope more science undergrad texts would do). It also contains great examples and illustrations that make it easy to follow the content. I don't think I would be able to use this book for my sophomore genetics class, but this would be an excellent addition to anyone taking an advanced molecular genetics class or related courses in grad school.

rarely have I actually opened a text book

Rarely do I make use of a textbook (what do professors think Google is for?), but this book is phenomenally written. It's both informative and an easy read. If anyone is looking for a human genetics text (anything post intro genetics level), I highly recommend this book.

This book is well worth the money if you have a cast iron frying pan, plan on purchasing one or want to reduce the number of pans and baking dishes you need in your kitchen.

This book covers all the basic information you need to choose a pan, to cook in and care for you pan , plus detailed recipes that walk you step by step through Frying, Baking, Roasting, Braising, Deep frying in and even using it as a Pie pan, Pizza pan or Baking golden brown breads with a crispy outside crust and billowy soft middle.

There is a reason Cast Iron pans were carried on the wagon trains that settled the west and have been found in kitchens for generations often the same pan.Cast iron holds the heat and stays hot longer than other types of cookware making it a favorite for searing and browning meat including steak, the rich caramelized crust you get on a steak will amaze you, in the oven it maintains a constant temperature better, cooking your food more evenly with a golden crust.

Cast iron cookware is the only piece of cookware that actually improves with years of use , its durability is legendary. It is virtually indestructible. great cookbook!

I love this cookbook! I've tried the whole roasted chicken on the cover (delicious) I've also made the chicken thighs, salmon with honey lime sauce (yummy) and have all of the ingredients ready for the one pan lasagna dish for tomorrow's dinner. The apple pie looks good as well as tons of other recipes that I will be making . Honestly, there are only two or three recipes in this book that I probably won't make, and a few others that I will likely substitute a main ingredient, like beef or turkey for the lamb. I wish that it were spiral bound, but then I wish that ALL cookbooks were spiral bound :) I am so pleased with my gift.

I have tried soo many recipes in this book and let me tell you, if you are cooking for two, and want just a little leftover, this is it. I cooked the chili, the steak tips and mushrooms, the whole chicken as seen on the cover and the cornbread with slight modifications).. look forward to trying all recipes.

excellent read, both funny and tragic. Fisher allows me to see her squirmy insides and shiny battle armour of self deprecating humour. This book is comforting and entertaining for someone dear to me who is also bi polar and laughed til they almost cried whilst reading this. Thanks Ms Fisher.
