Peter J. Denning is Distinguished Professor, Chair of the Computer Science Department, and Director of the Cebrowski Institute for Information Innovation and Superiority at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. FINALLY a book that is prescriptive about innovation

There are many books out there that have the word "innovation" in the title. THIS one was satisfyingly different in that it actually took me through the process of innovation. Other books talked ABOUT it, and this one was prescriptive and applicable with every chapter. The authors are incredibly well versed on the topic, and bring a rigor that I was not expecting to find with the recent trend of "light business books." This book is certainly not light, it was informative and entertaining while giving practical step-by-step suggestions.
This was time well spent...I'm curious where the authors will go from here.

A great roadmap for personal and professional growth

Over the past several years I've had an opportunity attend workshops with the authors and started learning these practices. They really work! They have helped me deliver projects in both a startup company and in a S&P 500 company.

As a PMI-certified Project Management Professional, I can tell you from my personal experience that these eight practices really work. They zero in on the essential outcomes that you have to achieve if you want your idea adopted into practice. All you need to do is make sure that certain conversations are happening.

For me, the simple beauty of these practices is that you don't have to spend a lifetime mastering them first before you can become successful. I was getting results almost immediately when I learned how to have conversations that secured reliable commitments.

Most people will discover that they have natural abilities in some of the innovation practices and may seem to be weak at two or three of them. That's why I really appreciated the checklist of actions I can take at the end of each chapter so I can focus my practice in those areas and improve. I don't need to be a master to succeed; I just need to be competent at the practice, which can happen in a month or so. The only effort needed is paying attention to how you're learning.

Sure, if you devote yourself to being a master of innovation and spend your lifetime at it, you will probably be able to do some amazing things that bring innovations to large numbers of people. But, as the authors point out, most innovations start in much smaller communities which are then "cross-appropriated" by others once the success of the innovation is established. This makes becoming an innovator something that is within the reach of anyone and doesn't require a lifetime to get there.

Another thing I like about this book is that the same eight practices define innovative teams, companies, and networks. You don't even need to be good at all eight. All you need to do is put the right team together -- and make sure they coordinate -- and your team can be successful at getting their ideas adopted into practice.

This approach is really empowering. With these practices, you can intentionally generate innovations!

Spectacular Text

This is by far my favorite med school text. It provides very clear and concise reviews of all the relevant physiology for each system, and provides numerous connections to pharm, histology, etc. as well as important clinical notes relating to specific points. I always start new subjects with this book and the rapid review histology - together these two provide a spectacular platform for learning the topic in depth. GET IT.

I really like the format of this book it is very concise, and it doesn't load you down with useless info. It is very easy to use to study from for any physiology class. I am currently using it in my graduate physiology class as a supplement. I recommend it to anyone taking physiology it will make your life easier.

The Best reference book for a Food Engineer

This was a required text in my Food Engineering Program, and now I use it as a reference source when I need to get immediate information and solution guides to problems while I am out consulting with clients. It gives just the right amount of data needed, and there are adequate references. I take it everywhere because I find this book full of practical examples which make it invaluable tool.

excellent text book

Geankoplis was listed as a reference text for our transport operations class, McCabe being the primary text for the course. I'm glad that I spent the extra money to acquire the text Transport Processes and Unit Operations because it was far better at teaching problem solving methods, especially other methods rather than just McCabe Thiele diagrams. It was a more comphrehensive treatment of the subject.

A classic of Chemical Engineering Processes

One of the best books I used in graduation and I found a miracle to buy it for such a low price. It didn't come with the CD but the book was nearly new. I couldn't be happier.
It covers most of the Unit Operations used in undergraduate. Also the chapters structure is easy to follow, so as the technical part. The examples and proposed problems are worth a look, too. I really recommend this for any chemical engineering student.

Fantastic Book for Self-Studying

I just graduated from high school and have a few months between now and medical college. Wanting to get a head start on my studying, I tried reading some anatomy books, but couldn't seem to get very far.

Then I found this book. From the first glance, I could tell that it was a lot more accessible than most other books (which are meant for people who are already in medical school or the medical profession).

Medical Terminology uses a good system- instead of just spitting lists of vocabulary at you, it teaches you the meanings of common prefixes, roots, and suffixes. Learning the meanings of word parts is far more efficient than learning individual words, as it enables you to then synthesize multiple words for yourself, or "decipher" long medical terms by breaking them down. For example, once you learn that "cardio" is a root meaning "heart", and "-megaly" is a suffix meaning "abnormally large", you'll know that "cardiomegaly" means an enlarged heart.

That being said, the book does also provide a good amount of vocabulary and supplementary terms.

The last few pages of the book are flash cards of word parts that are meant to be torn out. I found them extremely helpful.

The book's format is very reader-friendly. As you learn the word parts, there are short exercises and chapter reviews for you to do. (I photocopy these to make my own worksheets, since I don't like writing in my books.) There are also concise, textbook-style passages about anatomy or common clinical procedures, which provide you with solid basic knowledge without getting too in-depth. In addition, the book is visually appealing with nice pictures, pleasant colors, and good fonts.

The included CD offers extra exercises in different forms, to suit your personal learning style (visual, auditory, and/or kinesthetic.) You can take their online test to see which type of learner you are.

As the title of my review suggests, this book is great if you need to study on your own and don't have professors around to explain things to you. As a textbook and workbook combined, it is a fantastic basic course in medical terminology. Highly recommended to any beginning student of medicine!

Very comprehensive, but not advanced level (as it states)

This is fabulous for someone new to medical terminology. Even though I'm at a higher level, I've still found lots of helpful information that is somewhat new to me. There is quite a lot about anatomy & physiology--good overview of that, connecting it to terminology. The appendices are helpful, and there are several of them. The illustrations are first rate! There is a good list of common medical abbreviations--very helpful! I'm trying to preserve it, so that I can pass it along to my niece when I'm finished with it.

You want to learn Medical Terminology? Get this Book!

This is a good book for learning medical terminology. I am studying to become a Medical Coder at home by myself. Even if you don't want to be a Medical Coder, most jobs in the health care industry, such as medical receptionist, admissions clerk, data-entry clerk, all want the candidate to have medical terminology knowledge and application. This is the book to learn it from!
The book "breaks down" each medical words to really explain the the meanings of the prefix, suffixes and root. There are tests within each chapter to check your comprehension and progress and additionally, case studies to give you examples. I love the colorful and informative illustrations in this book. It is well written with very clear explanations with the end of chapter assessments so you can review what you have learned before moving on to the next chapter.
