About the Author

Pingali Venugopal, Associate Director, XLRI, Center for Global Management and Responsible Leadership, and Professor (Marketing), has teaching, industry, consulting, and research experience in the Marketing function in the Indian context for over 33 years. He has done his Post Graduate Programme and Doctorate from the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad. He has been a Marketing Faculty at XLRI, Jamshedpur, since 1994 and the Dean of the Institute from 2004 to 2010. He has also been a Visiting Faculty to leading institutes in India including the Indian Institutes of Management in Ahmedabad, Kolkata, Lucknow, and Indore and international institutes including American University of Armenia and Educatis University Switzerland. He has taught courses such as Marketing Management, Sales and Distribution Management, Agricultural Input Management, and Marketing Research at these institutes. Prior to joining academics, he has worked in Marketing Department of Coromandel Fertilisers and Nagarjuna Fertilisers and Chemicals Ltd for a period of 10 years. While at Coromandel, he was also involved in the launch of their cement brand.

Venugopal’s research and publication cover different marketing topics, and he has authored seven books covering the areas of marketing and Indian economy. His books Sales and Distribution Management: An Indian Perspective and Marketing Management: A Decision Making Approach have been adopted as texts in several business schools including the Indian Institutes of Management. On the invitation of Government of India, he prepared the report on Input Management, State of Indian Farmer―A Millennium study wherein he evaluated the impact of the policy measures on the Indian farmers from Independence to 2000. After the formation of Jharkhand, he was part of the steering committee of the Jharkhand Development Report prepared for the Planning Commission. As part of the report he also prepared the agricultural plan for the newly formed state. He is on the Board of Tata Metaliks, Advisor to Kerzon Consultants, and on the Academic Committee of National Institute like National Institute of Agricultural Extension Management, Hyderabad and National Institute of Technology, Jamshedpur. He has also been involved as an expert for programs conducted by some agri-business companies such as Zuari, UPL, and PI industries.

Best book on Camp David to Taba

Whilst there have been a number of books on this topic such as Enderlin's Shattered Dreams, Swisher's The Truth About Camp David and Dennis's Ross's verbose recollections in The Missing Peace, Gilead Sher's book is by far the best.

Filled with details of every meeting, discussion between Israelis, Palestinians and Americans, it fills in the missing details as to the motives and positions of the principal players in the negotiations. It reveals that the reason for the breakdown in the negotiations was complex and multi-causal, not simply a case of "exposing Arafat's face" as has so damagingly been popularised in Israeli and Jewish circles.

As Israel approaches a new round of final status negotiations after a break over six years, the Israeli government should have a good read of Sher's book for instruction. The time for wishful thinking regarding a final agreement is over - an agreement in the spirit of the Clinton parameters remains the best resolution of the final status issues, which as Sher sets out the Israeli government accepted, subject to minor clarifications over six years ago.

Wish you could be fly on the wall of the Camp David negotiations? Now you are

Yes, it's a history book. Yes, it is written by someone who was there, in the room, rather than by an author who merely interviewed participants. The answer is "yes" to all the questions which make this book a must read.

But, where this book distinguishes itself from dry historical accounts is that the author puts you right there. You are in the room with the key players. One is made to feel like the proverbial fly on the wall. The author, paints a word picture that leaves one smelling the cigars, the food, the tension, the fatigue of all night negotiations, and the emotional whipsaw of being inches from the finish line - the elusive peace.

A dry historical account it is not. The author fleshes out each of the key players. One comes to know their personalities and personal agendas. Their personalities come to life and evolve from two dimensional newspaper caricatures to three dimensional complex figures.

For one, such as myself, who started with the belief that a Palestinian/Israeli peace agreement is a fantasy, it is a strange journey to the truth. Peace, even if a cold peace, we come to learn, was, and still is, more a question of political will, driven by public perception, than it is an issue of security, borders, settlements, demographics, rights of return, and Jerusalem.

Gilead is my brother, so naturally, I am not objective, then again, knowing him personally, I can attest to his unyielding honesty, extraordinary analytical brightness and deep commitment to a fair solution to the Palestinian Israeli conflict.

Refelecting these qualities, "Within Reach," a best seller in Israel, and published illegally in the Arab Press, provides a fascinating insight into the overt and covert negotiations, detailing the Israeli and Palestinian positions on the core issues of the conflict -- Palestinian Refugees Right of Return, Jerusalem, Settlements, Security and Territories, Water. It recounts the ups and downs of the negotiations, the "players" personalities, the decision making process and the proposed solutions, which will no doubt serve as the blueprint for any future negotiations.

I highly recommend it for anyone interested in Israel, in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and most importantly, in the parameters of a possible agreement for the End of Conflict.

Sounding good just got easier

I've dabbled with exotic scales in the past, and have gone through the "Grimoire" series, but I could never make the results sound like anything resembling MUSIC. Before buying this book I surfed over to the website... and
checked out some of the MP3s - I was completely blown away by how good the samples sounded. Not only has this book taught me now to apply these new scales, it's also made general harmonic theory jell for me for the first time. The companion CD (which must be ordered separately, or downloaded from the site) contains a wealth of useful material, including extensive tablature, as well as audio and MP3 tracks - both with the leads and without so you can jam along with the progressions. I liked some of these examples so much that I actually ordered the CD by the Author's band (called Spontaneous Human Combustion), which is excellent, but not the subject of this review. One of the things that I especially like about the methodology presented is that it employs the "positional" playing approach, which is what I am most familiar with. If you're looking for a way to spice up your playing, this book will do it for you.

Any title containing the words mass graves portends some tough reading, and Koff's unblinking, direct memoir is not lacking in ghastliness. One of her aims, however, is to contrast her interior reactions to her work of exhuming and examining the victims of the Balkan and Rwandan massacres of the early 1990s with the meticulous professionalism needed to conduct it. Koff's observation that "when I analyze human remains I am interested, not repulsed" is shown in her objective descriptive writing about particular victims' physical characteristics and traumas. Away from the grave or autopsy table, however, Koff allows glimpses of the mental effort her professionalism requires by relating her numerous nightmares and manifestations of stress. She accepts this burden out of a deeply idealistic motivation--her hope that her career in forensic anthropology will reduce human rights violations in the world. Published ten years after the genocide in Rwanda, The Bone Woman is a riveting, deeply personal account by a forensic anthropologist sent on seven missions by the UN War Crimes Tribunal.

To prosecute charges of genocide and crimes against humanity, the UN needs proof that the bodies found are those of non-combatants. This means answering two questions: who the victims were, and how they were killed. The only people who can answer both these questions are forensic anthropologists.

Before being sent to Rwanda in 1996, Clea Koff was a twenty-three-year-old graduate student studying prehistoric skeletons in the safe confines of Berkeley, California. Over the next four years, her gruelling investigation into events that shocked the world transformed her from a wide-eyed student into a soul-weary veteran -- and a wise and deeply thoughtful woman. Her unflinching account of those years -- what she saw, how it affected her, who went to trial based on evidence she collected -- makes for an unforgettable read, alternately riveting, frightening and miraculously hopeful. One Account Of Grim But Important Work

Though this was published in 2004, this memoir looks back at Koff's work as a budding forensic anthropologist going out on her first major assignments in the mid to late 90s (the last bit of the book ends around 2000) and how these first jobs affected and molded her not only professionally, but as a person. I personally found this memoir fascinating. Not only is the work she does grim but interesting, but Koff herself comes from a unique background -- born in England, Koff comes from an American father with Polish-Russian heritage and an English-raised Tansanian mother (with 1/2 her family being from Uganda). As Koff puts it, "instead of national identity, we had strong family identity." This background influences Koff some emotionally when she takes her first job working for the UN to investigate mass graves of victims of the genocide in Rwanda. She quickly learns that many of the victims came from multiple backgrounds within one family tree and were often killed for it during the months of the genocide.

Koff first visits the mass graves in Rwanda in 1994, and again in 1996. Through her investigations and information that became available in the months and years after the genocide, it's learned that in less than four months, 800,000 people were murdered, most by blunt force trauma. In Kibuye (just one county in Rwanda) alone, 250,000 were killed in just three months, and over 100,000 children were left orphaned. IN MONTHS. One thing that Koff says she quickly picks up on and something she is really moved by is the clearly indomitable spirit of the people of Rwanda. Despite these horrors these families had to survive, she still found a community full of warm and friendly people who (maybe not always, but oftentimes) welcomed her into their homes and their lives. This maybe plays a part in her experiencing what she describes as occupational "double vision" -- where her professional distance with a skeleton was temporarily lost and she would get a strong vision of what the person might have been like / looked like as a living, breathing human being. As you might imagine, this can make your work extraordinarily difficult when processing mass graves every day if this happens multiple times a day, trying to document that many remains!

The memoir goes on to also share her experiences working in mass graves (victims of war crimes) in Bosnia, Croatia and Kosovo. The book is divided into sections by country and the beginning of each section includes a paragraph & map of the area briefly explaining the political situation at the time that led to the mass graves she ends up excavating. I thought this was a helpful touch for those who either don't remember all the historical facts of the time or have yet to learn them.

It's here that she illustrates cracks in the UN's systems of protection for their workers out in the field: she shares a story of how a security team was sent out in an armoured Land Rover that could withstand bullets but didn't come with doors that lock!

The accounts of her work in Bosnia I found especially saddening. Koff discusses how she is struck by the tragedy that bodies were being identified by family members recognizing their stitching patterns on the clothes (As Koff explains, during the war many citizens were left too poor to buy new clothes so old clothes were stitched together multiple times -- mothers, wives, daughters, etc were coming to grave sites and recognizing stitches on clothes. That's how they ended up identifying many). The grave sites ran so large sometimes that they actually had to be divided up into quadrants! But the story that struck me the most was regarding the body of a boy Koff discovers who still had marbles in his pocket. That's how young the victim was. That story just crushed me when I read that.

I think I can safely say, this book won't be for everyone. I for one though found her story fascinating and moving. Tragic, yes, but important work. Her job enables her to give surviving family members a sense of closure they maybe could not get otherwise. And like she said, her work also forces the killers to be held accountable. This memoir also makes the reader contemplate just how badly people can treat each other and how that has to change. But it won't change unless we face what's happened in the past. That's why I find this book an important read for those brave enough to delve into it.

Important for Anthro Students

I was surprised to read such negative reviews for a book that I dearly love and have bought twice (after one copy was loaned and not returned). Maybe it's just an anthropology thing. As an anthro grad student who wants to work in the same types of situation that Ms. Koff describes, her book gives insight into her experiences.

This is not a technical book, in fact it reads more like a memoir. So don't expect detailed excavation information, that's not what this book is. And Ms. Koff is young when she goes on these digs (she is just out of her bachelors when she travels to Rwanda). For those who may not know anything about anthropology, this is a big deal. People without a masters degree or with little field experience aren't usually part of these recovery efforts. Ms. Koff was lucky and competent enough to have worked with good professors who had connections and helped her to get on the UN mission. This is not to say she isn't a good scientist, she is, but as many in the field (and in life) know, half the battle is knowing the right person.

Some people seemed to want to see some strong emotional responses by Ms. Koff, and I can understand for most people excavating a mass grave in Rwanda would be horribly traumatic. But this is why some people do this work and others don't. You wouldn't expect a doctor or a firegfighter or a soldier to be so wrapped up in the emotion of the moment that they can't focus and get the job done. She is affected, she discusses what she is seeing, imagines what would she do if something as awful as genocide happened to her, how would she save her mother who suffers from some physical limitations making a quick escape impossible. These are the reactions of a forensic anthropologist who has worked on two long and difficult mass recovery missions.

There is a place for intense sorrow and grief. The book by the head of the UN security mission (his name escapes me) who worked tirelessly and with little resources to save people during the killing in Rwanda is a good example.

Ms. Koff's efforts begin several years after the killings ended. She is an anthropologist who knew what she was getting into and wanted to take on this difficult task to give something of the lost back to their loved ones. This is what a forensic anthropologist does. Becoming overwhelmed by her experiences does a disservice to the same people she is trying to help. She is affected, she feels the responsibility of the mission and her actions and the loss of lives keenly, but she sucks it up and gets the job done. If the Rwandans and Kosovars can bear their losses and continue on, the least she can do is what is expected of her and help them recover their relatives. And this is what she does.

She's competent,confident, but young and you can see the issues that occur when a small group of people are doing dangerous and emotionally wrenching work. This book is a must for anthropology students, especially those wanting to work in mass disaster and human rights situations.

Aspiring physical anthropologists, look no further!

This was the first book my anthropology advisor had me read the first semester of my freshman year of college and it solidified my desire to become a physical anthropologist. A student has since failed to return her copy, so I bought this one to give her as a "thank you" present before my graduation. Anyone considering anthropology should pick it up, it is wonderful! High quality used book. 10/10 would buy again.

This book ROCKS!

I love how this book is written, the author is thoughtful about the way he shares his stories. You can tell he cares about his audience because he writes in a way that you know exactly what he went through. You feel really bad for him at first but as you keep reading its very inspiring to see the changes he’s made to be a better person.

I would say it is a must read for anyone who’s made a mistake or two in life but even if you have a great life still an awesome read to get motivated to do more.

Practical Advice

I gave this book a 4 star rating because I don't prefer profanity in my books, but he has a lot of good advice that helped me stop, think and now "turn my life around". It "slaps me upside my head" and reminds me I don't have to keep making the choices that got me here. I MUST LET GO OF THE PAST and then I can head my life in a better direction.

He gives examples that can fit a variety of situations. Before I continue reading I review all my highlighted passages to really help seat the concepts, plus there is a "cheat sheet" in the back of the book to help you. I will read this book again.

Authentic, raw, and real

I've struggled with depression in my life. There, I said it. It's not something that I've been super public with before, but it's something that has shaped my identity for the better part of a decade.

Why do I bring that up? Because it's a difficult beast to tame and manage, and I look for any resources I can to help me. Fortunately, this book is one of the best on the topic for that. It's probably because of the authenticity that the author writes with, and it's very clear that he was also in dire straits before... possibly worse than me? Not like it's a competition, but that does give some valuable perspective that you won't find elsewhere. And believe me, I've looked.

Sometimes you just need a kick in the rear, and this book was definitely that as well.

Best therapy resource on the market!

I have purchased many resources as a student and now as a practitioner. This and the OT toolkit are by far the best resources I have found. The information is informative with practical intervention application. If you are a student this is a must have as you study various conditions and treatment. As a practitioner this includes amazing handouts in both English and Spanish, which are actually helpful and display written and picture directions. I highly recommend this for universities, students, practitioners, clinical fieldwork educators, and anyone caring for someone who wants to regain independence.

This is a comprehensive set of exercises which should meet the home exercise program needs of about any patient. Having the exercises in English and Spanish is an exceptional benefit. The price is very competitive in the world of home exercise program handouts and the treatment guides are very current. I would highly recommend this as a part of the "Tool Kit" of any PT professional actively involved in the care of patients. We have it available for all the clinicians in our large health care system.

A Great Addition for All Types of Settings

The PT Tookit is very thorough and detailed including impairments, assessments, interventions and patient/caregiver handouts. The handouts are easy to follow and include excellent illustrations for each activity or exercise. Definitely a useful addition to all types of settings for the adult/geriatric population. I highly recommend it.
