Knowledge Can Alter Your Perspective

If you've read Kitty's books before you know that they aren't generally "romance" where you get a Happily Ever After (HEA,) but they can include moments that seem tender. You're guaranteed a zinging plot twist that upends your mental state. This book follows those conventions, and it's the primary reason Kitty is a one-click author for me.
The Con Artist is a book about transformative learning, where the lead character is altered on psychological, convictional, and behavioral levels by the revelation of new-found knowledge. This story tilts the convention of a starving but talented artist, Saskia, who finds a morally-flexible sponsor who wants her artistic skills to enable the theft of a famous work of art. I can't do justice to more detail of the plot without revealing some of the hidden secrets of the characters, but be assured that both Saskia and her benefactor have multiple facades that show to different segments of society. When you have more in life to lose, you have to hide more of your true self. There is an obsession with breaking down their barriers, and a power exchange that demands full possession of being. I had a couple of "WTF" moments when reading this, because I struggle to identify with the mindsets that the creative can have. I respect talent, but my revere of it doesn't motivate me like it does the characters in this book; getting lost in the world that you create alters your path in the real-world. I constantly found myself asking the question "what would make *me* behave that way?" I enjoy a story that can both entertain me, as well as force me to think about what I consider to be reality.

*Note: While this is erotica, and there are graphic adult situations with plenty of kink, they are meant to drive the story and aren't just to titillate. I guarantee, some scenes may make you uncomfortable and cringe, but you won't want to put this book down!

Dark Erotica as It's Meant to Be

This book simply blew me away. I read it in one night. It's a dark, kinky portrait of obsession—obsession with art, with sex, with power and dominance. There are twists and turns, and psychological depth that goes far beyond the kink (though there's PLENTY of kink here, of all kinds). It's Kitty Thomas at her best, and I couldn't stop reading.

Wrecked Me So Good!

So... Yeah... A review. Not sure how to do this when my brain is still scrambled from the mind f**k I experienced yesterday from this extremely talented and amazing author. I have read every Kitty Thomas book there is and impossible as it seems, this one is even better. Each one she releases is always even better, despite the excellence of her previous releases. Wow. Just Wow. I had things I needed to do yesterday. I jumped on FB for just a minute and saw the post for this new release, one clicked and after that I had to read it right then because it was KITTY THOMAS! She is one of those authors for me. I don't need to see anything about the book except for the author and I must read the minute I know about the release. So I did. This book captured me, chewed me up and spit me out. It was a thing of beauty.

For those of you who are Kitty Thomas fans, you know what to expect and she does not disappoint. This is pure Kitty Thomas from the start to the very last line. It took me that long for things to come together, to click and for the looming question I carried throughout this book to be answered. Be prepared for extreme kink, dark eroticism, twists and turns, and a psychological thriller for both a character and for the reader. Be prepared to be constantly thinking about things, questioning things and then be prepared to continue with this well after finishing the book. Yeah. Ms. Thomas has not only done it again but she has out done herself!

If you are familiar with Kitty Thomas, then you know not to expect a romance. If you are new, you've been warned. This is not a romance. Its not about falling in love and finding your HEA or even HFN. Its about obsession, possession, fear of unworthiness, and survival. Its about wanting something to the point of obsession that you'll do anything to possess it, even if you don't think you deserve it. Its about a lot more but that's it for me. Its one of those books that you don't dare say too much about, well, anything because of giving spoilers. I can usually find a HFN in Ms. Thomas's books but I'm not sure about this one. It's one of the many things that can probably be debated to death. For me, I think its more of a possibility of a beginning of a "maybe" HFN... You just to one click and you'll understand.

One more thing, and this is my personal opinion. It pushed several boundaries for me, but that's not a bad thing and its not the first time that this author has done that.

As always, the writing, everything about the writing, is flawless. I don't know if its because its been a while but this writing seemed to be somewhat different with more details about the surroundings than I'm used to seeing in this author's books. Its not a bad thing, nothing she does could ever be bad, it just struck me as a little different.

This was suppose to be short. Sorry about the rambling but after reading it, you will understand. Your thoughts will be the same. I'm going to emphasize that this is not a romance. PLEASE do not purchase it knowing that and then leave a bad review because it didn't make you feel all tingly because I promise, it will make you feel many things but tingly is NOT of them.... As always, I recommend this author. If you are like me, I recommend this book. Just don't expect your brain to function well after reading it. OK, Ms. Thomas, I'm ready for the next one!!! Bring it...

The book seems like being designed for experienced programmers who want to pick ...

I bought this book months ago. Now I can't even pass through chapter three. The book seems like being designed for experienced programmers who want to pick up what they know before because the detailed stuffs are all omitted. I originally expected the source code is the starting point and the book guide me to build a completed one but it's a completed version of what he talks about.

Willful disregard for the bits that matter

Bought this to try and provide more help compared with what the Apple Docs give. Big disappointment. Starts off by explaining that the entire book is based on a single app that they have included on their website for ease of download and will be the underlying app used throughout. Unfortunately this app, the keystone of the rest of the book, simply doesn't work. In the span of 15 minutes, had to debug 4 errors, 3 of which I solved, until the Core data NSManagedObject/Entity types started to trip me up. Started reading-- the book-to-downloaded-code looks almost nothing alike. They leave out vast swaths of code explanation in the book compared to what's in the actual (unworkable) downloaded code. For reference, there seems to be at least 3 updates to the book, and the code since its development. Yes, I understand Swift is evolving, but seriously, other Swift books I've bought continue to be incredibly useful, despite changes in the language-- the errors that the book/code here have seem pretty basic, and for even THOSE to fail is just shameful. What a complete waste of time AND money. The book also simply skips over large amounts of conceptual info in favor of select parts the author deems suitable for explanation. The whole point of this book was to supplement the Apple docs, this leaves out just as many pieces as the docs do, making it completely ineffective. Avoid.

Not Detailed Enough...

I have tried read through this book several times and the detailed information is just way to sparse. The book does a good job of covering the topics of core, but at a weird high level - detailed level.

What I mean by that is the author has a fairly large application that he uses as an example. He pulls small snapshots of code from the larger context and uses that to explain a concept. There really is no introduction to Core Data, it is more of an introduction to the application where it uses Core Data.

Although I may come back to it later, for now it is on the shelf.

reS-Gr 1-The origins of Thanksgiving are explained by a group of mice as they put on a play for their animal friends. Cushman's cheerful spreads show the little creatures using handmade props and putting their all into this neighborhood production. The characters are charming and the colors are vibrant. Where pictures appear in a smaller frame, objects often extend into the borders for visual appeal. The problem comes with the text. Short rhyming stanzas at first seem to offer a pleasing read-aloud pattern, only to dissolve into an odd scheme, and readers may constantly try to recover a poetic balance that isn't there. Another problem comes with fictionalizing the Pilgrims as mice and keeping true to the Thanksgiving account. These diminutive Pilgrims wear clothes, sail on the Mayflower, suffer a hard winter, and plant corn, but that continuity breaks when "They built new homes in tree trunks-" instead of houses. There is a scarcity of Thanksgiving books for this age group that can adequately explain the historical significance of the holiday in very simple terms. Halloween Mice! (Clarion, 1995) by the same duo hit upon a combination of text and pictures that works very well, but it isn't trying to tie in a historical concept. If you aren't overly concerned with an odd poetic structure or a break in the logic of mice as Pilgrims, then this book should fill a gap in read-aloud Thanksgiving material for the younger set.

Thanksgiving is the story within a story here, as interpreted by a group of little costumed mice who are putting on a pageant. The rhymed verse sets an upbeat tone for the action. There's plenty of comic byplay in the watercolor illustrations, which show the furry thespians acting out a very simplified story of the Mayflower voyage, the hardships the Pilgrims endured on land, and the triumph represented by Thanksgiving. The happy--though occasionally hapless--members of the little troupe slosh paint on the stage and knock each other over with bits of scenery, as well as acting out the tale with enthusiasm. Preschool and early elementary grade teachers looking for a short, light introduction to the holiday may want to give this colorful picture book a try. Carolyn Phelan

Disappointing...

Not as cute or informative as I had hoped. I was looking for an age appropriate Thanksgiving story for my 3-year old, but this is defintely more for toddlers than preschoolers. Not quite exciting enough to hold his interest.

Decent holiday fare

This is a pleasant but fairly mediocre Thanksgiving book for young kids. Its premise is that mice are putting on a play about the first thanksgiving. We watch the show and then cheer at the end. The artwork has a few clever moments in it depicting stage hand mice pushing Plymouth rock props into the scene, etc. The text, however, doesn't flow very well. It is told in terse couplets, as if in verse, yet often the verses fail to rhyme - or if they do, we wait a few pages for the rhyme to come. Thus, any readaloud singsong quality which the text is apparently meant to have (and which is the only thing that might compensate for its abruptness) is foiled. The idea of the play is engaging enough to make this an interesting addition to the sometimes thin genre of Thanksgiving picture books.

The mouse characters are as endearing as always, and the illustrations lend humor to the story, as the mouse characters struggle with props and preparations. Young fans of the holiday mice will love this delightful book celebrating Thanksgiving!

Alejandro Duarte learned how to program at age 13 using the Basic language on a black screen with a blinking cursor. He used to spend hours thinking of ideas for software that would be good to have and even more hours bringing this ideas to life. Alejandro graduated from National University of Colombia with a BS in Computer Science and has been involved in many Java related software development projects. He first started working with Struts 2 and quickly switched to more RIA-friendly frameworks such as Grails, JQuery, GWT, and Vaadin. Alejandro is the author of Enterprise App for Vaadin add-on and InfoDoc Pro, both open-source projects based on the Vaadin framework. Vaadin 7 UI Design by Example: Beginner's Guide review

I have been working with Vaadin framework for two years. I have chosen Vaadin for the idea to create complete web application using pure Java programming language. The speed of the development and the learning curve was really crucial in time I started to work with Vaadin, so that was one of the reasons why I have chosen Vaadin framework.

To the book:
Finally I have time to do read the book Vaadin 7 UI Design By Example: Beginner's Guide and share my impressions from it. The book was written by Alejandro Duarte and released by PACKT Publishing in July 2013.

The book guides you as a beginner thru the first chapter as a beginner who do not know anything about the vaadin framework. There are tutorials how to create first Vaadin project in Eclipse development environment (including plugin installation). There is also covered how to create project from Maven archetype in my favorite NetBeans IDE. Anyway as far as I know there is a new plugin for the NetBeans IDE.

From the first look it looks that book will continue with the boring component to component description: How to create label, button event, combobox etc. Luckily NO. The book nicely clarifies how is the client server communication made. How is the Vaadin data model made and how to work with it.

If you are really beginner I would recommend you the chapter Vaadin's Data Model. This is really useful to get understand how is the hierarchy in Vaadin data model made. There are clearly clarified properties, items and containers and that is the core what you need to know to become a real Vaadin developer.

Another core knowledge covered by the book is a layout component. The book simply and clearly covers how does the layouts and their customization works.
The best and the most useful part of the book is the part covering tables. If you really want to develop enterprise applications you simply need tables! And the Book's examples are covering almost everything you need to do with the them. How to use other components in tables how to connect data model to tables, etc.

Anyway there are missing advanced topics which sooner or later every advanced programmer will need and this is lazy loading, advanced filtering and so. That is probably why authors used the "beginners" word in the title.

Conclusion:
It is really nice book for beginners, anyway I am still waiting for the book which will cover advanced topics like huge data visualization and management in Vaadin. Including my favorite MongoDB or other noSQL data visualization capabilities.

Great UI overview to get you on the right path with Vaadin

I apologize that I am repeating this for all of the Vaadin books... these are good books to have if you use Vaadin, even if you take the training courses. Vaadin has become a great tool and it has a lot of features, not all of which you would discover without training, reading or browsing the API docs. And there are a lot of right ways and not-so-right ways to use Vaadin. You don't want to use Vaadin the "wrong" way. Use it right, and it pays off.

Excellent book, but poorly 'bonded' pages.

The content of the book & its arrangement is perfect. Very detailed, yet easy to understand. I love the organisation of the chapters.

I have only one major issue: The book is poorly 'bonded'.... What I mean to say is that the pages are only glued. However, considering its bulkiness (the book is really THICK!!) & weight, it should have been sewn. I have to open it just enough to see more-or-less the whole page. Going any further would tear apart the pages! The book is fragile! I know it sounds weird to put it like that, but it is! Had I known, I would have bought the Kindle version.

It's really a shame to have this otherwise-excellent book so poorly bonded!

Rowling perfectly portrays Harry's frustration at being too old to shirk responsibility, but too young to be accepted as part of the fight that he knows is coming.
• Harry's detention with Professor Umbridge. Rowling shows her darker side, leading readers to believe that Hogwarts is no longer a safe haven for young wizards. Dolores represents a bureaucratic tyrant capable of real evil, and Harry is forced to endure their private battle of wills alone.
• Harry and Cho's painfully awkward interactions. Rowling clearly remembers what it was like to be a teenager.

Grade 5 Up–Opening just a few weeks after the previous book left off, the penultimate entry in the series is, as the author foretold, the darkest and most unsettling yet. The deeds of Voldemort's Death Eaters are spreading even to the Muggle world, which is enshrouded in a mist caused by Dementors draining hope and happiness. Harry, turning 16, leaves for Hogwarts with the promise of private lessons with Dumbledore. No longer a fearful boy living under the stairs, he is clearly a leader and increasingly isolated as rumors spread that he is the Chosen One, the only individual capable of defeating Voldemort. Two attempts on students' lives, Harry's conviction that Draco Malfoy has become a Death Eater, and Snape's usual slimy behavior add to the increasing tension. Yet through it all, Harry and his friends are typical teens, sharing homework and messy rooms, rushing to classes and sports practices, and flirting. Ron and Hermione realize their attraction, as do Harry and Ginny. Dozens of plot strands are pulled together as the author positions Harry for the final book. Much information is cleverly conveyed through Dumbledore's use of a Pensieve, a device that allows bottled memories to be shared by Harry and his beloved professor as they apparate to various locations that help explain Voldemort's past. The ending is heart wrenching. Once again, Rowling capably blends literature, mythology, folklore, and religion into a delectable stew. No more diversions about the welfare of house elves or the intricacies of Quidditch. This penultimate offering is more about tying up loose ends and fleshing out the backstory. Harry and the gang are back at Hogwarts, but the mood is grim. The wizard community is now fully aware that evil has returned, and the citizenry is afraid. Harry has been left bereft by the death of Sirius Black, and there are more killings to come. In a powerful early scene, readers learn that a pivotal figure is seemingly not to be trusted, yet throughout there are hints that he or she is a double agent. Later Harry becomes entangled with a former student known as the Half-Blood Prince, having accidentally acquired the prince's Potions textbook, but this turns out to be a mixed blessing. Rowling also devotes time to a carefully crafted telling of the story of Lord Voldemort's early life, which Harry and Dumbledore piece together by plucking other people's memories. Rowling is at the top of her game here. For those able to reach just beyond the engrossing tale, there is commentary relevant to today: how governments offer false security about perilous situations and how being in a constant state of war affects people's behavior. Harry is almost 17 now, and this is a book for older readers, who will best understand the moral implications of his choices. Ilene Cooper

Excellent book from the Harry Potter series. A+++

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is book 6 in the Harry Potter book series by J.K. Rowling. It is a thicker book than the previous books, and it is a lot heavier for sure. The quality of the book itself is excellent. Dust-jacket is very nice. Constructed same as the previous books. Story-wise, things just get more and more interesting that you can't put the book down and don't want to stop until you find out what is next after each page.

This is my favorite book of the entire series. It is very dark in some places, but the flashbacks into the past in where we learn so much about Voldemort or Tom Riddle are very interesting and engaging. Danger is everywhere. Everything seems to be at risk, and you just don’t know what will happen next. Nothing seems to be safe anymore. There is also a little romance, but tension as well. It’s a pretty big book. A lot of pages to read. But, I was able to read it over a weekend or so with determination.

There are so many plot lines in this book, and the pace does not let up from first page to the last page. There are new twists and turns. I cannot reveal without spoiling. This is definitely an excellent book.

I recommend this book for sure. It is priced fairly I think on Amazon. If you have Amazon Prime, the 2-day Free shipping is nice.

I got hooked on these books by accident around when the second movie came out. After that, I had to read them all and I was one of those people who would buy the book at the midnight release.

The high point in a truly magnificent series

This is at least my fifth reading of this, easily my favorite book of the HP series. I get more out of each book upon every re-read, and this one especially. One of the great joys of the series, and especially of HBP, is the humor JKR manages to thread throughout the story, even as things are sad, or scary, or serious. The tiny references to Harry's burgeoning affection for Ginny, the way Fred and George manage to slip in one-liners even as chaos is erupting around them, it always feels like a gift from the author. This book, maybe more than any of the others, also really takes the time for character development. This is the book where Hermione becomes one of the great female characters in fiction, and where Harry stops being the victim of constant happy accidents and starts making his own choices. Plus it's just a really great mystery story! And ties in so importantly (obviously) with the overarching mythology.

I will always remember receiving this book the day it was published (July 2007, right?), a day I had to go to a wedding and also shop for a big dinner party. I hid the book under my seat at the wedding and kept turning the pages behind my ankles, only looking up at the ceremony every page or so. Then I had the book balanced on my shopping cart, blindly tossing vegetables and cans in as fast as I could. When I got home, I finished the rest of the book by 2am, texting with my sister, saying, "I'm on page xxx." We finished within a few minutes of each other, exchanging comments on what sobbing messes we were. Later that week, I was walking to lunch and saw a girl sitting in the sun outside of the bank (where she presumably worked). She had the book in her lap and her head in her hands, obviously on one of the sad, stressful final chapters. I wanted to just go over and give her a hug.

Book Hangover Alert!!

This book is not a standalone. You must read the first two book, in case you did not know. The amazing This Much Is True and The Truth About Air And Water!

I'm a reader not a writer. My reviews are usually short and sweet. I've actually had to take a few days before I could write this review.

I know this author. I have read all her books. I know what she is capable of doing to me when I read her books. So it is no surprise she did it again. Angst, frustration and ugly crying .

I love Linc and Tally! I have rooted for them and cried with them. Katherine Owen doesn't just write or take the easy way out. She takes you on a journey.

I,like many others, asked her to continue this journey. So why, when she gives it to us, am I surprised! Nothing on their journey to be together is easy. Just because they get married and you want their HEA is a guarantee that the road to that happiness is easy. Their careers and lack of trust in themselves and each other continue to plague them. I find myself getting so aggravated with them. You want to yell at them! They are human to me, they screw up a lot! Yet, they love and they learn and they pay a heavy price for that love. Love they do, though.

They are each other's elements (book 2!) And they needed to remember that. People in your life can be stupid and mess up but you them and you don't abandon them. That's how I felt about Linc and Tally. I want their, journey to continue but I am not sure my heart could take it!

The only reason this is not a 5 star review is because of things that happened in their story that played as a constant that I felt took away a bit from the story. I hesitate in writing this because I love this author and these characters and I want you to read this book!!!

In the end, it doesn't matter what I want for Linc and Tally because Katherine Owen stayed true to herself and these characters. This is why I LOVE her writing so much!

Make the investment in your time and, money. READ THIS SERIES!!!

It was like going to the amusement part and not letting anyone ...

It took me forever to get my wits about me to finally write a review. This book took my heart on a roller coaster ride and never got off. It was like going to the amusement part and not letting anyone else get on the ride because you just keep riding, over and over and over again. Linc and Tally's story will stay with me forever, and this is the BEST and WORST way this amazing story could have ended.

And, I hope, it hasn't ended for good. ;)

Hell of a ride! Emotionally packed from the beginning to end

At the beginning of the book the author writes:
"If you believe in fairy tales and happy endings, and you want to stop right here and bask in the wonderment and joy of it all, please do. If you want to know the rest of our story, you need to take a deep breath and tell yourself that everything will be okay, that everything works out, and life happens, and in the end love is all you need. Someone has to tell you these things, just like someone had to tell me. All I know is that the truth never dies, and it does set you free, whether you want it to or not. And in the end? All you have is love. Love is all there is. ~ Talia Landon Presley"

This statement says it all! If you hate the way KO tortures her characters you need to hang on to your chair and get ready for the ride. If you don't like heart break and crying and horrible tragedy then this book is not for you.

KO is a creative writer and when she writes her stories there is no fantasy but she brings you to the characters and you can understand and sympathize with their imperfect lives. Don't get me wrong I don't always like the outcome but this is not the hearts and flowers romance that you get from other authors.

This is the third book with Tally & Linc and it has been a roller coaster relationship but when you see the words "I love you more today than yesterday.” The reader has hope that this young couple has been through enough and is ready for happily ever after but then again this is Mrs. Owen that we are talking about. You need to read the story to find out what happens in this twisted relationship!

I highly recommend this story and hang on for the ride because this one was the best one yet! ❤️
