The Camps U.P. North is a brief history of the old logging and hunting camps of Northern Marquette County in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Most were constructed between 1880 and 1910, a testament to our immigrant fathers who came to Michigan to work the iron mines and find a better way of life. With them came their love of nature and the desire to have a place of their own in the woods.
This "History in the Woods" was a labor of love for me since my father was one of those immigrant miners and great woodsmen. Many of the stories my father and uncle told about living off the land and the people who frequented them are included in the book. The Camps U.P. North is truly their story!

A Slice of History Past.

Michigan's Upper Peninsula is rich in history. Here hunting is a tradition. Bjork's book brings us back to an era where camps were located well off the beaten path and during the Great Depression these forest outposts were used for far more than simiply hunting; they became places of refuge for homeless out of work men. Here they lived off the land.

Bill Bjork takes you on a trip of old camps. He visits the logging and gold mine eras. He tells of Camps with odd-sounding names from Camp Weasel to North Star. The weasel in the coffepot episode is one entry yoou don't want to miss.

This is a one of a kind book that belongs on your istorical bookshelf.

Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826), the third president of the United States, left a vast literary legacy in the form of
journal entries, notes, addresses, and seventy thousand letters. Jefferson remains one of the country's most extraordinary figures;

Kennedy said that his guests were "the most extraordinary collection of talent, of human knowledge, that has ever been gathered at the White House, with the possible exception of when Thomas Jefferson dined alone.
This volume of his works, edited by Adrienne Koch and William Peden, represents many of Jefferson's most important contributions to American political thought. It includes the Autobiography, which contains the original and revised version of the Declaration of Independence; the Anas, or Notes (1791-1809); Biographical Sketches; selections from Notes on Virginia, the Travel Journals, and Essay on Anglo-Saxon; a portion of his public papers, including his first and second inaugural addresses, and over two hundred letters. The editors have provided a general introduction and introductory notes that precede the major works.

Jefferson the " American Mind"

This study is a wonderful compilation of the life and writings of Thomas Jefferson. The introduction by Koch and Peden of Jefferson's long and fruitful life is rich and complete. Jefferson's greatness shines forth in the pages of this volume. His Anas, Autobiography, Essay of the Anglo Saxon language, Notes on Virginia, And his numerous public papers and letters show the reader the depth of this great man. Koch and Peden clearly admire Jefferon which is a welcome respite from the sad and anti-intellectual deconstructionist philosophy of modern historians. No PC here. For a student of Jefferson, or someone attempting to familiarize themselves with his ideals, this is a great buy!

A Look into the mind of Jefferson

Because the letters and other writings have been written in the English of Jefferson's time, the book is somewhat difficult to read. I had to read it slowly to take in Jefferson's ideas and feelings. The book includes the Declaration of Independence which spells out the reasons for the American colonies to declare independence from Britain. Jefferson's letters to John Adams are included as well. Adams and Jefferson were long time friends but became disconnected later in their lives. Finally, they make amends close to the end of their lives. There are also letters to a French woman who Jefferson was in love with while he was Ambassador to France. One of the most interesting concepts was Jefferson's idea of the separation of church and state. Jefferson believed that the religion should not intermingle in the affairs of the state. As Ambassador to France, Jefferson learned about the problems of authoritarian rule of a king over the common people. Jefferson was appalled at the poor representation and meager powers of the civilians of France compared to the powers of the King of France. Overall, this book is a good inside look at the ideals, beliefs, and feelings of one of the founding fathers of the United States.

A excellent anthology for your library

We added this book to our library when I was doing research for a doctoral project on Racism. In one volume, is Jefferson's autobiography, travel journals, essays, biographies of other historical figures, notes and correspondence. It is a wealth of material into a foundation stone personality of our American identity.
Lately Jefferson has drawn fire because of his position on slavery and his philandering activities as a plantation owner. Still, within this volume you can observe the full story historical context provides.
In my favorite passage in connection with the slavery issue he writes,
"And can the liberties of a nation be though secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of thepeople that these liberties are the gift of God? That they are not to be violated but with His wrath? Indeed I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just; that his justice cannot sleep forever; that considering numbers,nature and natural means only, a revolution of the wheel of fortune, an exchange of situation is among possible events; that it may become probably by supernatural interference! The Almighty has no attribute which can take side with us in such a contest." (Notes on Virginia, Query XVIII; p. 278 Modern Library Edition)
I think every family should have a copy of this volume in their library. It is enlightening, powerful and life changing material.

Easy to read, but not very informative.

After being diagnosed with Bipolar II in March of 2009 I wanted to read more about it before proceeding with treatment. Less Than Crazy is one of the books I ordered and overall I got very little out of it. Dougherty's coverage of Bipolar II is very broad but an inch deep. The book is very easy to read, but that comes at the expense of depth. The substance of the book is so general that you'll come away knowing more about Bipolar II from reading Wikipedia.

First off, the author does a VERY poor job distinguishing Bipolar I from Bipolar II.

Second, she makes an incorrect claim that Bipolar II is a "milder" or "watered down" version of Bipolar I. This is an INCORRECT statement unsupported by psychiatry literature and doctors themselves. Bipolar II is a different disorder that has some commonality with Bipolar I but has a range of symptoms unique to Bipolar II. There are many studies that suggest that suicide rate with Bipolar II is equal or higher to that of Bipolar I, so there is nothing mild about this illness.

Third, the author basically glosses over the symptoms of Bipolar II, such as the deepest depression or the "mixed states," that torture so many of us Bipolar II patients.

I found the personal stories she includes in the book too generic to relate to because they could describe people with a hundred other ailments, people having a tough moment in life, or just lousy personality. I have no more insight into what other people with Bipolar II go through after reading something like "Joe had an inflated sense of entitlement" or "Jane had a hard time getting out of bed."

For readers completely unfamiliar with Bipolar II this may be an OK first read, but this is definitely NOT the book to rely upon if you are looking to truly understand Bipolar II.

This book CONFUSES an already difficult diagnosis

As one who has bipolar disorder, I am always looking for books to help me and my family better understand this mood disorder. This book promised same, but instead of doing such, it further confused the diagnoses of I and II. This work concentrated on finding out if you're a "little" or a "lot" bipolar. As one who has suffered many years with this disorder, I could care less about this. I just wanted help understanding as to better manage bipolar. I would not recommend this book to anyone.

An honest review

Im an RN and MHN and I also have Bipolar II. I was expecting something more considering the Authors stated experience but she managed to get a few things very wrong. She also limits the symptoms of bipolar and personalises it. Yes she has bipolar and she has had a hard life. But the biggest mistake in this book is the false claim that bipolar II depression is less than Bipolar 1 depression which it clearly isnt. I could quote a library of books on this, but this is an informal review so I wont. I would not recommend this book to anyone who is initially interested in bipolar, but only if they want another perspective and an additional book for their collection. She could have done so much better, and it also caused me to question the MD who supposedly edited this book. She quotes people that contractict her outright which I also found amusing. To the author, please read more widely and dont be in such a rush to publish "something".

A veteren film editor shares his life

Rosenblum edited feature films from the late 50s until early 80s, and is most noted for his collaborative efforts with Woody Allen in the 1970s. But his most interesting stories in the book are from a decade earlier when he was still experimenting. Though, I have only seen about half of the movies Rosenblum writes of, it makes the stories no less fascinating.
Rosenblum's major accomplishment in the book is to shed light on the importance of the film editor in motion pictures. He's not wrong in stating that their efforts have been largely ignored by critics and the public at large. What's interesting is that the editor as an influence in film is rarely even discussed by film critics and historians. It's probably because people are largely unsure of what an editor's true contributions are to any one motion picture.
Through the course of the book, Rosenblum takes apart THE RAID ON MINSKY'S, THE PAWNBROKER, and ANNIE HALL in depth. He also gives examples of how much an initial cut of a film can differ from the final cut.
I found the book quite informative, and learned more about film editing than I had expected.

A Filmmaking Insider Talks About His Craft

This is a fascinating look inside filmmaking. Most of the examples are from the 1960s and 1970s, but that does not lessen the impact or relevance.

The author is a master of the film editing craft. He also writes with insight and emotion. As you read, you'll learn how a film is "cut", how a film evolves, and what makes a film "work."

This book deserves a place in the bookcase of any student of the filmmaking art or craft.

Robenblum explains how the Allen's icon of the 70s changed in the editing room from clutter to the paradigm of the modern romance/comedy. Other Allen movies are discussed in detail and the craft of editing is laid out between the lines.

About the Author
Judith A. Lewis (Ph.D., University of Michigan) retired in 2008 from Governors State University, where she served as Professor and Chair of Addictions Studies and Behavioral Health. A licensed psychologist in Illinois, she is a past president of the American Counseling Association (ACA) and the International Association of Marriage and Family Counselors. She is co-author of MANAGEMENT OF HUMAN SERVICE PROGRAMS, Fifth Edition; COMMUNITY COUNSELING: EMPOWERMENT STRATEGIES FOR A DIVERSE SOCIETY, Third Edition; and SUBSTANCE ABUSE COUNSELING, Fifth Edition (all Brooks/Cole Cengage Learning).

Robert Q. Dana (Ph.D., Vanderbilt University) is Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students at the University of Maine. He has direct responsibility for all campus life programs including Greek Life, Alcohol and Drug Education Programs, Residence Life, Counseling Services, and campus-wide crisis management services. Dr. Dana spent a substantial part of his career as an addictive behaviors researcher and practitioner. He writes frequently on substance abuse and has conducted numerous studies on epidemiology and etiology of alcohol and other drug abuse. Dana has served as an extramural reviewer for state and federal agencies and as a journal reviewer for Addictive Behaviors. He teaches courses on addictions and is a member of the graduate faculty at University of Maine.

Gregory A. Blevins (Ph.D., Western Michigan University) is a retired Professor Emeritus from the College of Health and Human Services at Governors State University. He held positions as the assistant dean of the college, chair of the Addictions Studies and Behavioral Health Department, and full professor of Addictions Studies. He completed the Specialty Certificate in Alcohol and Drug Abuse in 1974 and his doctorate in Sociology in 1979. Dr. Blevins is a founder and life member of the International Coalition for Substance Abuse Educators and has served as a trainer for the Bemidji Area Office of Indian Health Services since 1988.

PLEASE ENABLE THE TEXT TO SPEECH FEATURE!!!

Please enable the text to speech feature! I commute 8 hours per week for my Masters program and I listen to my books on my Kindle device. ALSO there are individuals who cannot see or have learning disabilities that would greatly benefit from this feature. In addition, college students can catch up on chapters while they are exercising, driving, etc. Please consider this! Thank you

Near perfect textbook

I'm just about finished with an MA in psychology. This text is small and succinct yet comprehensive enough. After purchasing massive tomes for other classes only to use a small portion, I appreciate it when text can cover the material without overkill.
This text is a keeper. The coverage of the various substanes is very brief so a good supplemental text is Buzzed : The Straight Facts About the Most Used and Abused Drugs from Alcohol to Ecstasy - 3rd edition.
