About the Editor E. K. GREENWALD developed a series of courses on electrical safety which are taught annually in the U.S. and abroad. He is an Associate Professor of Engineering Professional Development at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, as well as President and Chief Engineer of Energy Analysis, Inc., a firm that performs energy-related engineering and economic studies for industry and government. As a private engineering consultant, Dr. Greenwald has worked for the U.S. Air Force, U.S. Navy, IBM, ITT, AMOCO Chemical, U.S. Post Office, and numerous other facilities. He is a Registered Professional Engineer in five States, and a member of ASHRAE, IEEE, AAEE, and IES. He earned his Ph.D. in Physics/Biophysics at Ohio State University.

Heather Dubrow, John D. Boyd, SJ, Chair in the Poetic Imagination at Fordham University, is the author of six scholarly books, most recently The Challenges of Orpheus: Lyric Poetry and Early Modern England (Johns Hopkins, 2008). Her other publications include the Evans edition of As You Like It, a co-edited collection of essays, the essay on Twentieth-Century Shakespeare criticism in the second edition of The Riverside Shakespeare, and numerous articles on Shakespeare, lyric poetry, and pedagogy. A poet as well as a literary critic, Heather Dubrow has also published a collection of her own poetry, Forms and Hollows (Cherry Grove Collections, 2011) and two chapbooks of verse; she is director of the Poets Out Loud reading series. Her previous academic appointment include the University of Wisconsin-Madison (where she was Tighe-Evans Professor and also John Bascom Professor) and Carleton College.

Fun

What can I say? This is a fun book, at least if you're a fan of Margaret Thatcher. She's a very attractive politician in addition to being a good one, so it's a pleasure to look through the book as it follows her life and political career. To nitpick just a little, though, two small errors caught my eye. On page 36, a caption says Thatcher is 33 years old, when she would have been 34 at that time. On page 122, Thatcher heads to Reagan's first inauguration on "25 February 1981" when he in fact he was inaugurated on January 20. Still, an impressive piece of work this volume.

The Source of Target Earth

This short story served as the basis for the classic science fiction film "Target Earth," which should make any fan of the film eager to read it. Aside from that, however, it's a darn good story. The situation of a disparate group of people alone in a mysteriously deserted city is handled identically in story and film, as are the personality types, though the story naturally goes more into depth. Where story and film diverge is in the treatment of the alien invaders. Whereas the film puts them center stage and makes them menacing and dangerous, the story treats them almost as an afterthought. That's because the story is not about the invasion but the establishment of relationships in the midst of a disintegrating society, while an invasion (with killer robots) is the only reason to buy a ticket to the film. Both story and film are excellent, and both are worth your time.

Exciting Story Made Into Feature Film

As I was reading this classic sci-fi story I kept thinking, "wow this would make a great movie." Imagine my surprise when I looked up the author and found out Hollywood agreed with me! Late 50's film called Target Earth is based on this story.

Imagine waking up to a deserted city, no signs of life, staring windows being the only eyes you see. This is the experience of 5 very different people. Read to find out why and if anyone is left standing at the end. Tightly written with well drawn characters. The story doesn't really date itself, so you aren't jolted out while reading. My only complaint is that Hollywood hasn't updated this classis tale. Quick, fun read. Highly recommend.

I like the sequence of the lessons. It really works well with struggling students. Gives them an opportunity to review skills taught from previous lessons. This book was recommended to me by a reading teacher. I like that it is very structured. It directs the teacher.
