About the Author

Marge Lial (late) became interested in math at an early age—it was her favorite subject in the first grade! Marge's intense desire to educate both her students and herself inspired the writing of numerous best-selling textbooks. Marge, who received Bachelor's and Master's degrees from California State University at Sacramento, was affiliated with American River College. An avid reader and traveler, her travel experiences often found their way into her books as applications, exercise sets, and feature sets. She was particularly interested in archeology; trips to various digs and ruin sites produced some fascinating problems for her textbooks involving such topics as the building of Mayan pyramids and the acoustics of ancient ball courts in the Yucatan. We dedicate the new editions of the paperback developmental math series to Marge in honor of her contributions to the field in which she helped thousands of students succeed.

Diana Hestwood lives in Minnesota and has taught at Metropolitan Community College in Minneapolis for two decades. She has done research on the student brain and is an expert on study skills. She is the author of Lial/Hestwood’s Prealgebra and coauthor of Lial/Salzman/Hestwood’s Basic Math and Lial/Hestwood/Hornsby/McGinnis’s Prealgebra and Introductory Algebra.

About the Author
Lorenzo Candelaria (Bachelor of Music, Oberlin College, 1995; Ph.D., Yale University, 2001) is an award-winning teacher and author at The University of Texas at Austin, Butler School of Music. He is the recipient of prestigious fellowships from the Fulbright Program and the National Endowment for the Humanities and was presented with the Robert M. Stevenson Award by the American Musicological Society for his book THE ROSARY CANTORAL (2008).

Daniel Kingman is an American composer and Professor Emeritus, California State University, Sacramento.

Good Survey of American Music

I teach a course in United States music history at the high school level, and this college text is a good stretch for my students. It is clearly written, well organized, and provides great points for departure in my lectures. The accompanying CD set, though not perfect, is a convenient way to bring in examples and allows for some independent study. Music history teachers can augment the examples with their current CD holdings.
The text surveys "American" music, not just music of the United States, although that is in the majority. The distinction of American versus U.S makes for a good discussion point throughout the semester. We do not take the chapters in order (we begin with music of the early European settlers), and the book lends itself to that flexibility.
Although there may be better texts for specific music history topics, (i.e., Jazz or contemporary "serious" music) this is an excellent survey text for the advanced high schooler or college music history survey course. Term paper suggestions, questions for additional research and bibliography are included at the end of each chapter.

I ordered this book for my college class, and thought it had the CDs. It doesn't. I spent a lot of money for being "just" the book.

Uneven in its weight to genres of music

This is a concise edition of Daniel Kingman's previous book of the same title. I know of it having been used as a high school textbook on American Music.

Kingman's book begins with a great introduction of some of the various ethnic/folk musics of the American musical tradition: Anglo-American, African-American, American Indian, and Latino backgrounds. Part Two looks at music which germinated from the South-Country, Blues, and Rock. Other sections examine popular sacred music, secular music, jazz, a substantial section on classical music, and a small epilogue on other regional styles.

This text is good because it is not too difficult to read and interesting overall. Kingman does a good job of introducing the music and providing useful descriptions of each style.

His bibliographies at the end of each chapter are fantastic, and he also provides many useful project ideas which would work great for high school/college classes alike

Unfortunately, there are a host of problems. First, the section on jazz is too short (30 pages), as well as those on rock (25 pages) and musical theater (20 pages). Kingman also neglects to put each movement in its proper historical context. This does not seem to be an important goal for him.

Many courses teach either American Popular Music or American Art/Classical music, not both. There are better texts out there which are more specific. For a survey course on all American music, this can work, but will certainly need to be supplemented with primary source materials and information on jazz, rock, Broadway, and other areas.

Chapters cover nonlinear equations, Visual Basic, linear algebra, ordinary differential equations, regression analysis, partial differential equations, and mathematical programming methods.

Each chapter contains examples that show in detail how a particular numerical method or programming methodology can be implemented in Excel and/or VBA (or MATLAB in chapter 10). Most of the examples and problems presented in the text are related to chemical and biomolecular engineering and cover a broad range of application areas including thermodynamics, fluid flow, heat transfer, mass transfer, reaction kinetics, reactor design, process design, and process control. The chapters feature "Did You Know" boxes, used to remind readers of Excel features. They also contain end-of-chapter exercises, with solutions provided.

About the Author

Victor J. Law, Ph.D., FAIChE, FIChemE, CE, initiated a program that was to become the Department of Computer Science at Tulane. During his tenure in computer science, he wrote two textbooks on introductory computer programming. In 1988, Dr. Law returned to the Chemical Engineering Department in order to resume his research career. He has taught classes in process control, transport phenomena, process design, engineering statistics, and numerical methods for chemical engineers. His research has included projects in coastal erosion, methane emissions from rice paddies, thermochemical processes for hydrogen production from water, and butanol production from biomass. Dr. Law is a Fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers; a Fellow of the Institution of Chemical Engineers; a Chartered Engineer in the United Kingdom and Europe; and a Registered Professional Engineer, State of Louisiana.

Excellent companion text, or reference for the working engineer

A little short on the theory behind numerical methods, but a very good reference for the working engineer who's got the background already. In fact, this is exactly what I'd want my notes to look like after a solid course on numerical methods (if I had the willpower to take great, detailed notes, that is.) The emphasis on Excel as opposed to traditional programming languages fits nicely with today's work environment.

helpful prep for ase tests

I've worked on diesel's for years and am preparing to take the ASE light diesel exam. This text was well worth the money and time in reading. It has great explanations of what's going on inside injection pumps, how emissions controls work, and electronic engine controls. If you already have a good handle on gas engines and want some background to move into light diesel's this book is a great place to start. I don't think it would do you much good if you don't already have a handle on basic engine mechanics and electrical concepts- it is not a basic text.

The book is easy to read and well written

I am a certified gas tech and just wanted to get the light diesel to be master certified. The book is easy to read and well written. There are no answers to the questions at the end of the chapters though. Not that big a deal though. You know when you have the answer right or you need to go back and review.

This book was great, very funny and thought-provoking. I stood in the library aisle giggling and I think I was getting some funny looks from other patrons. :)

I have only one issue with it. I realize that not eveyone can be a Barry Manilow fan like me (ever since 1996 when I was sixteen), but everyone who dissects his music seems to make one error in common. Calling the title "I Write the Songs" a misnomer because he didn't actually write that song is incorrect and missing the whole message of the song. He is not singing, "I, Barry, write the songs." He is saying, "I, music, write the songs." He is using a literary device called personification to say some things about music in general. Heaven knows that Barry has been around a long time :), but I don't think anyone could say that he's been alive literally "forever," as the first phrase of the song goes. Music has been alive forever. Music wrote the very first song. Music has its own place in our souls. See what I'm saying? Hopefully I'm making sense.

Anywho, though, a delightful read.

About the Author
Dr Cheng-Lung (Richard) Wu is a Senior Lecturer with the Department of Aviation at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia. He obtained his PhD from Loughborough University, UK, in 2001. Since then Cheng-Lung has devoted much of his time to the subjects of airline operations, schedule planning/optimization, and delay/operations modeling, both through his research and also consulting for several major airlines. Cheng-Lung also publishes extensively in major air transport journals, such as the Journal of Air Transport Management and Transportation Planning and Technology, and is an editorial board member of the World Review of Intermodal Transportation Research and the International Journal of Aviation Management.
